THIS WEEK IN ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
AHSFHS.org Report
(Aug. 21, 2021)

Week One

The 2021 season began Thursday night and a near full slate of games played Friday night. Here are a few tidbits entering the season.

   *  The 2021 season opened with most teams getting underway despite weather delays, cancellations and just five forfeits. There are a few games that will be played Saturday to wrap up the first week of the season.

   *  The Lee Montgomery vs. Daphne game was cancelled due to the unfortunate death of one of the players at Lee, Dimitri McKee, a senior at the school. Our prayers are with the family and the school.

   *  Five games were forfeited. They include Opp over Geneva, Holtville over Goshen, Barbour County over Stewart County GA, Center Point over Wenonah and lastly Aliceville over Greene County. That is far better than where we began the season last fall.

   *  In Montgomery at the AHSAA Kickoff Classic Handley handled Guntersville Thursday night by a score of 55-21. On Friday Dothan edged Bob Jones 42-32 in a Jamboree game.

   *   Did you see the Pike Road score? Seems the Patriots started scoring as soon as they got off the bus in Mobile and defeated McGill-Toolen by a score of 76-51. While it is only thirteenth on our list of 'most points scored by both teams in a game', it is surely an impressive way to open a season with a victory over an impressive opponent. By the way, the most points scored in a game by both teams is 146 set back in 2016 when Childersburg outscored Central Coosa 82-64. It was the most points allowed by a McGill-Toolen team since losing to GCMA of Mississippi 106-0 ninety-nine years ago.

   *   Thompson defeated a very good Oxford team 55-0. That does not bode well for the rest on Class 7A football this season. This may be their best squad yet.

   *  The 700 win watch. Fayette County lost 6-0 to Winfield and will be after their 700th victory next week at Bibb County. The T.R. Miller Tigers also fell to Jackson 47-44 and are sitting on 698 all-time wins.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 232 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs open the 2020 season as the #2 team in 7A and face a powerful North Gwinnett Georgia team in Atlanta on Saturday.

   *   Four number one teams lost this weekend. St. Paul's, Pinson Valley, Mars Hill and Pike Liberal Arts all fell in week one.

   *  Fyffe with a string of forty-six consecutive victories after kicking off the 2021 football season with a 30-6 win over a very good program in Isabella Friday night. The Red Devils have a shot at the all-time record for the longest winning streak in Alabama if they can put together another ten wins during the regular season. Clay County won 55 straight games between 1994-1997.

   *   Barbour County did something they had not done in sixty-six consecutive games spanning seven seasons. The Jaguars won and did it without even suiting up Friday. They won by forfeiture over Stewart County GA due to Covid restrictions at the Georgia school. Next up is Columbia with fifty-three straight losses.

   *   Fyffe has a streak of 39 consecutive region wins with no signs of slowing down this year. The Red Devils open region play against Collinsville on Sept. 3rd.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 50 consecutive region games and will begin a quest to break that streak against Sylvania on Sept 3rd also.

   *  The Fyffe Red Devils have won 59 straight regular season games. That already is the state record.

   *   Fyffe also entered the 2021 season with a string of 49 consecutive home wins. Their next contest against Collinsville will be on their home turf.

   *   Fyffe also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 17 consecutive road games following their latest road victory against Isabella.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 280 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   With a record of 699-357-35, Fayette County could very well become the first team to reach 700 victories this season. T.R. Miller could very well join them early this season with 698 wins.

   *   Bessemer Academy was shutout 31-0 by Glenwood School. It was the first time they had not scored in a game since 2012 some 114 games ago.

   *   McAdory not only picked up an impressive 21-7 victory over reigning state champs St. Paul's, they also won the 500th game in the history of football at the school. Congrats to Coach Aryvia Holmes and the Yellow Jackets.

   *   Luverne defeated J.U. Blacksher 34-7 for the 599th win in school history. Next week they can join the 600 win club if they can knock off 1A powerhouse Brantley.

   *   Clifford Story won his 100th game as the head football coach at Lanett. The Panthers destroyed Georgiana 54-7 to open their season in style. Coach Story has amassed a record of 100-41 in thirteen seasons at the helm of the panthers. His team won state championships in 2017 and 2019.
