AHSFHS.org Report
(Sep. 4, 2021)

Week Three

Region play began this week for most schools across the state as teams compete for one of the four playoff slots in each region. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action in Alabama.

   *  The 2021 season rolled into the third week of games with only a handful of cancellations and forfeits. One note from a game last week. Pleasant Grove forfeited their 61-24 victory over Oxford after reportedly using an ineligible player during the game.

   *  Only seven games were forfeited due to the virus situation at the following schools.

South Carolina School Deaf SC forfeits to Alabama School Deaf
    Columbia forfeits to Athens
    Central Tuscaloosa forfeits to Demopolis
    Cornerstone Christian forfeits to Lakeside
Westwood GA forfeits to Southern Prep Academy
    Brindlee Mountain forfeits to Sylvania
Sumter Central forfeits to West Blocton

   *   In an unusual game with an odd score, Baldwin County defeated Blount 2-0 in a defensive struggle. The last time a game ended with a 2-0 score was only a few seasons ago when Marengo beat Pickens County in 2018.

   *   Thompson is still on a roll after defeating Tuscaloosa County 58-0. The Warriors have outscored three opponents 168-0.

   *   What is up at Keith? The Bears are 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 130-0. Most impressive is a 43-0 victory over 1A powerhouse Linden. This is going to be a team to watch for the rest of the season.

   *   The 700 win watch. The T.R. Miller Tigers defeated Cottage Hill Christian 36-6 and picked up their700th all-time win. Fayette County did not play this week and will once again be after their 700th victory next Friday at Curry.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 234 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *   All seven Number One teams won handily this week so there will be no shakeups in the ASWA polls this week at the top of each classification.

   *   Fyffe has a string of forty-seven consecutive victories following a convincing 50-0 victory over Collinsville. The Red Devils have a shot at the all-time record for the longest winning streak in Alabama if they can put together eight wins during this season. Clay County won 55 straight games between 1994-1997.

   *   Columbia with fifty-five game losing streak lands in the top spot this week after forfeiting their game with Athens over the weekend.

   *   Fyffe has a streak of 40 consecutive region wins. Will they ever lose another game? They take on Sylvania next Friday night on the road.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 51 consecutive region games after forfeiting their game against Sylvania this week.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils have won 60 consecutive regular season games. That is the state record.

   *   Fyffe has also put together a string of 50 consecutive home wins. Their next home contest will be against Brindlee Mountain in two weeks.

   *   Fyffe also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 17 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 281 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Congratulation to head coach Phillip Rivers as the St. Micheal Cardinals defeated a ranked team for the first time in school history. They surprised Jackson by a score of 24-21 Thursday night. His father won 152 games at Pelham, Decatur and Athens. Rivers retired after seventeen seasons in the NFL with the Colts and Chargers.

   *   Coach Bob Godsey at Madison Academy picked up his 200th career victory over the past twenty-four seasons at Brook, Hartselle and Madison Academy. The Mustangs outscored D.A.R. 53-17.

   *   Head football coach Terry Curtis picked up his 250th victory as the head coach at UMS-Wright as the Bulldogs defeated LeFlore 52-0. His record with the Bulldogs in twenty-five seasons is 250-55. Over his thirty-three year career his record stands at 327-91.

   *   Luverne's win over Coosa Central by a score of 63-6 was the 600th overall victory for the Tigers in school history. They become the 26th school to reach that mark.

   *   Cordova has amassed 599 victories since first fielding a football team back in 1925. The Blue Devils will shoot for number 600 next week against John Carroll after falling to Pleasant Grove 46-18 this week.

   *   Gardner Gilliland at Cleveland reached the 100 win mark as the panthers swamped Locust Fork by a score of 62-19. His record in fourteen seasons at Oneonta and Cleveland is 100-52.
