AHSFHS.org Report

Week Six

Many teams took the mid season break from region play to give us some very interesting match ups this week. Region play resumes next week for most teams. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action in Alabama.

   *   There were some great games Friday night. Helena outscored McAdory 41-35 in an overtime thriller. Catholic Montgomery proved they are for real by defeating a good Montgomery Academy team 42-0. Pleasant Grove ran over Central Clay County 35-3 in a match up of potential title contenders.

   *   The 2021 season rolled into the sixth week of games with only one forfeit.
Appalachian forfeits to West End Walnut Grove

   *   In game to be completed Saturday, Fairfield leads Jackson-Olin 26-20 in overtime. Fairfield had taken the lead when gunfire outside the stadium led to the game stoppage.

   *   Alabama is 17-21 against out-of-state competition in 2021. That includes 8-8 against Georgia, 5-3 against Florida, 3-4 against Tennessee but 0-6 against Mississippi.

   *   Helena, James Clemens and Randolph are all 6-0 on the season. It is the first time for each of these schools.

   *   The top ranked Thompson Warriors continue to cruise after defeating #4 Mountain Brook 51-0. The Warriors have outscored six opponents 310-12. The Warriors are strolling through the 7A competition and have won 24 straight games.

   *   Class 7A region three is proving once again to be among the strongest in the state in 2021. They are 16-4 against non-region opponents. The top five teams are 14-0.

   *   Not far behind is 1A region four with a non-region record of 16-5. Maplesville and Notasulga are both 6-0 this season.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 237 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs rolled over Prattville 35-16.

   *   Mars Hill, the top ranked team in 2A, fell to 6A Cullman 49-7 so there may be a shakeup at the top of the 2A rankings this week. #2 Lanett was also beaten by Handley 19-18. Is it possible Clarke County could be the #1 team in 2A? It would be the first time in school history.

   *   Fyffe has a string of forty-nine consecutive victories following an open date. The Red Devils have a shot at the all-time record for the longest winning streak in Alabama if they can win another seven games. Clay County won 55 straight games between 1994-1997. Verbena won 50 games in a row almost 70 years ago.

   *   Columbia is in the middle of a fifty-eight game losing streak following a 41-8 loss to Tanner.

   *   Fyffe has a streak of 42 consecutive region wins. The Red Devils host Plainview next Friday night.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 53 consecutive region games after falling to Sumiton Christian in a non-region game.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils have won 62 consecutive regular season games. That is the state record.

   *   Fyffe has also put together a string of 51 consecutive home wins. Their next home contest will be against Plainview.

   *   Fyffe also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 18 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe did not extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 283 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Susan Moore was shutout by Oneonta 40-0 stopping a string of 77 games in which they had scored dating back to the 2014 season.

   *   Maplesville reached the 600 win mark with a 47-13 win over rival Jemison on Friday night. The Red Devils are 600-332-19 since first playing football in 1934. We are still missing a few scores for them.

   *   Deshler has found the going tough thus far in 2021. The Tigers are 0-5 for the first time since the 1957 football season. They take on Wilson next week following an open date.

   *   Have you noticed the race for the second spot in all-time victories among the head football coaches? Terry Curtis takes a one game lead over Danny Horn with 329 wins. We will keep an eye on this one as they approach Coach Buddy Anderson with 346 victories as a head coach. Also Paul Benefield is tied with Jamie Riggs for fifth place.

   *   Sylacauga, off to a 3-2 start this year will be shooting for win number 600 next week against Elmore County.

   *   Cordova has amassed 599 victories since first fielding a football team back in 1925. After an open date this week, the Blue Devils will shoot for number 600 against Wenonah in next week.
