Week Eight

Region races are clearing up after eight weeks of play. We only have another three weeks in the regular season before the playoffs begin. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action in Alabama.

   *   Upsets galore last week. This week the offenses decided to show off a little. Four teams scored over 70 points on Friday.

   *   In what seems more like a basketball score, Hueytown outlasted Northridge 75-55. The Golden Gophers led 36-28 at halftime before putting the game away.

   *   Elba just simply blasted Abbeville 82-14. It is the most points ever scored by an Elba team.

   *   Midfield defeated Cold Springs 70-8. The seventy points are also the most ever scored by Midfield.

   *   Isabella led 73-0 at the half and coasted to a 79-6 win over a hapless Calhoun team.

   *   In key matchups this week, #2 Autauga Academy scored late to top #1 Escambia Academy 31-17. Fairhope topped previously undefeated Theodore 21-12. Hartselle beat Muscle Shoals 52-35 and Pleasant Grove defeated Parker by a score of 42-28.

   *   A few teams have wrapped up region championships already. Central Phenix City (7A), Helena (6A), Northside (4A), Lauderdale County (3A) and Wadley (1A). Congratulations to these teams.

   *   Brewer snapped a 21 game losing streak as they upset Mae Jemison 43-36.

   *   Only one forfeit this week as Curry sat the week out due to Covid concerns handing a victory to Northside.

   *   Alabama is 25-30 against out-of-state competition in 2021. That includes 11-9 against Georgia, 7-7 against Florida, 5-4 against Tennessee but 1-10 against Mississippi.

   *   Helena and James Clemens continue to put up victories and are 8-0 on the season. It is the first time for each of these schools.

   *   The top ranked Thompson Warriors continue to roll toward the playoffs after defeating Gadsden City 41-7. The Warriors have outscored eight opponents 400-26 and have won 26 straight games.

   *   Catholic Montgomery (7-0) continues to dominate every opponent. The Knights have shutout six opponents and outscored them all 393-13.

   *   Class 7A region three is proving once again to be among the strongest in the state in 2021. They are 16-4 against non-region opponents. The top five teams are 14-0.

   *   Not far behind is 1A region four with a non-region record of 16-6. Half of those losses belong to Barbour County.

   *   On the other end resides 5A region 3. The seven schools are 4-17 against non-region foes and only Demopolis 4-3 is above the .500 mark this year.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 239 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs rolled over rival Spain Park 52-10.

   *   The only number one team to lose was Escambia Academy to second ranked Autauga Academy in the AISA.

   *   Fyffe has a string of fifty-one consecutive victories following their win over North Sand Mountain by a score of 42-14. The Red Devils have a shot at the all-time record for the longest winning streak in Alabama if they can win another four games. Clay County won 55 straight games between 1994-1997. The Red Devils have the longest winning streak in the nation.

   *   Columbia is in the middle of a sixty game losing streak following a 42-8 loss to Cullman Friday night.

   *   Fyffe has a streak of 43 consecutive region wins. The Red Devils travel to Geraldine in a region game next week.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 55 consecutive region games after falling to Asbury 36-30 in a region game. The Lions actually led late in this contest but eventually lost the game.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils have won 64 consecutive regular season games. That is the state record.

   *   Fyffe has also put together a string of 52 consecutive home wins. Their next home contest will be against Scottsboro in their season finale.

   *   Fyffe also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 19 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 285 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Trent Taylor, the head football coach at Andalusia, will be looking for win number 250 next week when the Bulldogs take on Greenville at home. During his 34 year career at Kinston, Straughn and Andalusia Coach Taylor has a record of 249-143. The Bulldogs seem to have the motto of 'we will play anyone, anywhere' as they always have a tough schedule. Their non-region schedule includes Faith Academy, Fairhope, Bibb County and Crestview FL. All are quality opponents for any team.

   *   Oneonta defeated Scottsboro 35-14 and became the third school this year to surpass the 700 win mark. They join T.R. Miller and Fayette County as the only teams with 700 victories in their history. The Redskins are 700-360-33 all-time.

   *   Cordova snapped a four game losing streak as they defeated Carver of Birmingham by a score of  22-20. The win gives the Blue Devils a record of 600-361-25 since they first fielded a football team back in 1925.

   *   Interim head coach Reginald Melton took over the head coaching duties at Headland two weeks ago. Former head coach Rodney Dollar went 2-4 to start the season for the Rams.
