 2022 Predictions

The only thing certain about 5A is that we will not have a repeat champion as Pike Road has advanced to 6A. Will that open the door for Pleasant Grove to finally win that elusive state title? The Spartans have been won 36 games over the past three seasons but finished each year in second place.

Other contenders for a title will be Central Clay County, Alexandria and UMS-Wright. Look for a surprise team or two from the likes of Gulf Shores, Moody and Fairview. Fairview will be looking to build on the best team in school history last year. The Aggies will be led by junior running back Eli Frost.

Moody returns skill players and with a new head coach could be the sleeping giant in 5A. Gulf Shores will benefit from great coaching and players like QB Brendon Byrd and RB Ronnie Royal III. Parker will be loaded with D1 prospects and are coming off their best season since 1980.

The competitive balance rules set up by the AHSAA may slow down the championship runs for UMS-Wright but make no mistake the Bulldogs will still be competitive.

Class 5A may be the most competitive classification across the board. Region six could produce three teams capable of making deep playoff runs but beyond that the competition seems to be fairly even around the state. Regions two and three have one team each that won more games than they lost in 2021.

 Most Victories 2010-2021

UMS-Wright has won twenty eight more games over the past dozen seasons than any other 5A school. Only five other teams have won more than the Bulldogs during that time. Leeds under coach Mask and Pleasant Grove are in hopes of narrowing that gap over the next few seasons.
