2022 Super Seven Picks

My guesses for the Championship games. That is all they are.... guesses.

7A   I think Thompson has found their key to success on offense. The defense was never in doubt but it took them a while to find ways to move the ball and score on offense. While I know Auburn is a very good team capable of beating any team in the state it is just difficult to pick against Coach Freeman after all his success in championship games. I had Thompson as the #1 team in our preseason predictions and I think that is where they end up in 2022. The Warriors are eight point favorites according to the AHSFHS Power Ratings. So I see them winning their fourth Blue Map in a row.  Thompson 21-19.

6A   The North, mostly Birmingham schools, have won the last six and nine of the last ten, championships in 6A. What does that mean for this year? Absolutely nothing at all. Mountain Brook is likely the most sound football team in the state. They do not make mistakes very often. I do believe Saraland is the team of the future with a bunch of skilled players in the sophomore class. Is that future now? I do not know. What I do know are the keys to this game. Saraland's best chances are to get into a shootout with a high scoring game or Mountain Brook has to do something they have not done all season. Make a ton of mistakes. Mountain Brook is favored by seven points.   Mountain Brook 27-21.

5A   Since 2000 the north has won exactly five state championships in 5A. The only two wins in the past ten years were by Central Clay County in 2018-19. I think this year the strength has moved to the north teams. Ramsay is a very dangerous team when they play without mistakes which has been most of their recent games. Where did Charles Henderson come from? I kept picking against them and they just kept winning. But, I think now they will meet a team with more speed and more skilled players than they have seen previously this season. If Ramsay keeps the mistakes to a minimum this game will likely not be close for long. The Rams are a 12 point favorite in this game.  Ramsay 34-13

4A   The South teams have also dominated 4A recently winning the last eight contests and 19-of-22 since 2000. Why? Mainly UMS-Wright. The Bulldogs won eight titles during that time but they are 5A now so it opens up the field for some newcomers this season. Most fans expected to see Catholic Montgomery here this week but for the second year in a row they were upset in the semi-finals. Andalusia finally got over the hump and reached the finals after falling short in the semi-finals five of the past six seasons. This game will come down to defense I believe and therefore I have to go with Andalusia. Andalusia 28-27 in a close one.

3A   These were the top two teams in our preseason predictions for 3A so I am not surprised to see them both here. We have one of the best matchups in my opinion in 3A. The Piedmont Bulldogs are a regular at the Super Seven so they are tested. They also have a great coach and leader in Steve Smith. No doubt one of the best in the business today at the high school level in Alabama. They will go against a newcomer to the championship game in St. James. The players to watch  in the game will be the quarterbacks Jack Hayes against Junior KJ Jackson could produce fireworks. Both teams have other players capable of making big plays also. Piedmont is favored by three points in this one and I will go with the Bulldogs.   Piedmont 35-32 in a wild one.

2A   This will be brief. Fyffe is favored by 14 and I think they win by that amount. Coach Benefield has built a monster at Fyffe and the Red Devils just continue to do what they do. Win state championships. They may be without their star running back Logan Anderson for this one but I am sure there are others capable of carrying the load. B.B. Comer is a first time participant in the Super Seven but has proven they are worthy of being here.  Fyffe 36-20.

1A   The South teams have won six of the past seven title in 1A and this year should be more of the same as the Leroy Black Bears are back in the hunt for another state championship against Pickens County. The Bears have star players all over the field especially on defense and are favored to win the game by 12 points. I can see that happening but in a closer game.  Leroy 34-28.
