The 2022 season began with a bang last Thursday night. Here are a few tidbits
from this week's action.
* Wow! What a start to the 2022 football season. If you missed any of the
action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.
* The biggest game of the week was played in Georgia as Buford forced
Thompson into numerous turnovers and walked away with a 38-7 victory over the
Warriors. There is no need to worry as Thompson will be back next week winning
as they have the past few seasons. It will not be easy as they take on defending Tennessee
state champions Lipscomb Academy at home.
* There were a few games won in dramatic fashion Friday night. Fairhope
returned an interception for a touchdown as time expired to defeat Spanish Fort
34-28. Cullman stripped the ball from the Mars Hill punter then recovered it in
the endzone for a touchdown with no time remaining for a 13-10 win.
* Good Hope and West Point played for 48 minutes without either team scoring
a single point. Good Hope eventually won the game 6-0 in overtime.
* The Sparkman Senators rolled to a 77-9 victory over Hazel Green.
Either one team is very good or........
* Opening week always has a few surprises. Ramsay defeated Hueytown 41-28 in
a shocker of sorts. While I was not surprise by the win I was mildly shocked by
the score as St. James easily handled Montgomery Academy 42-14. The Trojans are
a team I thought highly of preseason and will be following closely all year.
* We must congratulate the newest winners in the AHSAA. Whitesburg Christian
beat up on Woodville 47-8 for their first win ever. Tuscaloosa Academy marched
into the AHSAA and promptly thrashed Holy Spirit 45-12 in the school's first
contest after moving over from the AISA. Lastly Northside Methodist won their
first game since joining the AHSAA by defeating Houston County 42-20 on
Thursday.
* Did you notice in the region standings that Brindlee Mountion is 1-0 to
start the season? The Lions outscored Cherokee 26-20 to break a 43 game losing
streak. Elmore County snapped a ten game skid by beating Marbury 35-17 Thursday
night.
* Alabama teams went 4-6 vs. out-of-state competition. They were 2-5 against
Georgia, 2-0 vs. Florida and 0-1 against Mississippi.
* Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing
249 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.
The Bucs opened the 2022 season as the #5 team in 7A and dropped a 17-14
decision to an excellent
Auburn squad at the AHSAA Kickoff Classic in Montgomery.
* The Clay-Chalkville Cougars kicked off the 2022 football season
by extending the state's longest winning streak at sixteen straight games. The
Cougars put on a clinic in running over a very good Briarwood team by a score of
48-0. What a way to start a season.
* Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 63 straight contests.
They fell to Fairview 51-0. Columbia could surpass the state's
longest losing streak in history
held by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a
row.
* Lanett has a streak of 33 consecutive region wins.
The Panthers open region play in a couple of weeks. American Christian (28),
Mars Hill (26) and Spring Garden (26)
are the next three schools with long region region winning streaks.
* Brindlee Mountain has lost
56 consecutive region games
but do not begin region play for a couple of weeks. Barbour County has lost 51
straight region contests.
*
The Pike Road Patriots had their 29 regular season winning streak snapped in a
28-21 loss at Hillcrest Tuscaloosa. The Brantley
Bulldogs will assumed the top of this list with a
string of 25 consecutive regular season wins. Brantley defeated rival Luverne
31-7.
* Mars Hill saw their
34 consecutive home winning streak stopped by Cullman in dramatic fashion.
Thompson now has the longest home winning streak with a string of 29 straight
wins on their home turf.
* Guntersville holds onto the longest road
winning streak having won 13 consecutive road games. The Wildcats shutout
Southside Gadsden 21-0 Friday night.
* Maplesville saw their string of 17 consecutive
seaon opening victories snapped as they fell to Meek 36-12 to start the season.
*
Fyffe hopes to avoid the dreaded shutout and extend their streak of
consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 291 games
without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354
games.
* Opelika can win the school's 600 game next week as the Bulldogs host
Jeff Davis. Opelika got their 599th win with a 29-28 vicotry over Callaway
Georgia.
* No less than
eight different coaches will be in search of
their 100th win as a head football coach once the season opens. All have over 90
victories during their careers.
