THIS WEEK IN ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

AHSFHS.org Report
(Nov 5, 2022)

First Round of 2022 Playoffs

The first round is history. No the real state championship race begins. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings and the scoring averages for every team will be available by Sunday. If you missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything. We will also have previews for every second round game Sunday. Predictions will be posted Monday.

   *   The remaining undefeated teams:
           6A - Hartselle (11-0), Hillcrest Tuscaloosa (11-0), Theodore (11-0)
           5A - Leeds (10-0), UMS-Wright (11-0)
           4A - Anniston (10-0), Catholic Montgomery (11-0), Deshler (11-0) Priceville (11-0)
           3A - Dadeville (10-0)
           2A - Fyffe (11-0)
           1A - Elba (11-0), Meek (11-0)
           AISA - Lee-Scott Academy (10-0), Patrician Academy (11-0), Jackson Academy (11-0)

   *  Where to start? How about this. Parker pulled off the upset of the year by knocking off #2 Clay-Chalkville 7-6. Nothing Parker (7-4) had done this season could have led to this prediction. Hat off to the Parker players and coaches this week. The Cougars were held to their lowest point total since 2016.

   *  Number four seeds beating number one is always interesting and this year is no exception. Vestavia Hills, Dothan High, Parker, St. Paul's, Pike County and Mobile Christian all pulled off the upset as number four seeds this week.

   *  B.T. Washington knocked off Orange Beach in a wild game 46-43 for their first playoff victory ever. Coosa Christian accomplished the same feat when they beat Hackleburg 51-8. Dothan High picked up their first ever playoff win by outscoring Foley 42-28.

   *  Class 7A region three swept region four for the third consecutive season and the fourth time in five years. Also in 7A region two swept region one.

   *  Arab, B.T. Washington, Coosa Christian, Dothan High, Falkville, Gulf Shores, Priceville, Randolph and Vincent have never won a second round playoff game.

   *  Tuscaloosa Academy advances to the second round of the playoffs in their first year in the AHSAA. The Knights defeated Locust Fork 42-28 and will play Lexington next week on the road.

   *   Teams who have not won second round playoff games in a while include; Enterprise (1993), Meek (1993), Theodore (1999), Valley Head (1989), West Morgan (1994) and Wicksburg (1998).

   *   The best second round matchups I would most like to see; Saraland (10-1) at Hillcrest Tuscaloosa (11-0), Moody (10-1) at Arab (10-1), Handley (10-1) at T.R. Miller (10-1), Priceville (11-0) at Oneonta (10-1) and Highland Home (10-1) at Ariton (10-1).

   *   Teams who have never hosted a second round game include; Dothan High, Arab and Priceville.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the second round along with their all-time record in the second round of the playoffs. Andalusia 11-3, Colbert County 25-6, Deshler 23-7, Homewood 16-1, Hoover 28-1, Maplesville 27-5, Sweet Water 21-7, T.R. Miller 24-10, UMS-Wright 25-5. Mars Hill is 4-0 in the 2nd round.

   *   Best home team records in the second round of the playoffs for teams hosting games next week. Hoover 16-0, UMS-Wright 16-3, T.R. Miller 12-4, Deshler 15-4 and Maplesville 15-1.

   *   Road teams with the best records for teams playing next week on the road. Maplesville 12-4, Etowah 7-2 and Leroy 9-4.

   *  Meek is 11-0 for the first time ever. Priceville is 11-0 for the first time ever. Anniston is 10-0 for the first time since 1991 and Theodore is 11-0 for the first time since the 2000 football season. Lee-Scott Academy in 10-0 for the first time ever.

   *  Gulf Shores (10-1) is off to the best start in any season ever. Arab is 10-1 for the first time since 1993. Vincent is 10-1 for the first time ever. Moody is 10-1 for the first time ever. Demopolis is 10-1 for the first time since 1983. Southeastern has never been 10-1 in any season previously. Valley Head is 10-1 for the first time since 1983.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 260 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. That record will roll over to the 2023 football season now.

   *  Deshler defeated Madison County 68-34 and leads the state with twelve consecutive wins.

   *  Catholic Montgomery has scored 40 or more points in eleven straight games and 22 of the last 24 games.

   *  Clay-Chalkville had won 19 straight home game games before falling to Parker. UMS-Wright now tops this list having won 16 straight home games.

   *  Catholic Montgomery also has the longest road winning streak at 15 games. That will be tested naxt week as the Knights travel to Jacksonville. Oneonta has won 14 straight on the road.

   *  Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 302 games after beating Red Bay in the first round 55-8. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *  Coach Terry Curtis at UMS-Wright is now the all-time leader in coaching victories having surpassed Buddy Anderson for the most wins by a coach in state history. The Bulldogs defeated Headland 56-13 this week. His overall record stands at 347-92 in 34 seasons and Shaw, Murphy and UMS-Wright.

   *  Brantley became the 37th school to record their 600th win this week with a 39-3 victory over Choctaw County. The Bulldogs are 600-335-15 since starting their football program back in 1926. To be fair Brantley we are missing a lot of scores for games played prior to 1950. They likely have many more victories under their belt.

   *  Dora defeated Good Hope 34-6 to record their 500th win in school history. The Bulldogs are 500-446-29 since first fielding a football team back in 1925.
