Third Round of 2022 Playoffs

The playoffs have reached the semifinals for the lower six classes in the AHSAA while the teams in the 7A state championship game are set. AISA championship games winners can celebrate titles for 2022. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings and the scoring averages for every team will be available by Sunday. If you missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything. We will also have previews for every semi-final game Sunday. Predictions will be posted Monday.

   *    The AISA State Championship games were played Thursday at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
8-Man -  Evangel Christian Academy outscored Springwood 38-28 to claim the first ever AISA 8-Man football championship.
A -  Lowndes Academy (11-2) defeated Jackson Academy (12-1) 24-8 to claim their second consecutive title.
AA - Patrician Academy (13-0) shutout Clarke Prep (9-4) 60-0 to claim their first title since 2017.
AAA - Lee-Scott Academy (12-0) defeated Glenwood School (8-4) 35-21 to claim their first championship since 1994.

   *   The five remaining undefeated teams:
           6A - Theodore (13-0)
           4A - Catholic Montgomery (13-0)
           2A - Fyffe (13-0)
           AISA - Lee-Scott Academy (12-0), Patrician (13-0)

   *  The Class 7A finals are set. Thompson will take on Auburn on November 30th in Auburn to kickoff the Super Seven Championships. The Warriors shocked Hoover 40-10 while Auburn scored late and held off Central Phenix City 14-13. These two teams played an epic game in 2020 with Thompson pulling out a dramatic 29-28 come from behind victory. Class 7A went exactly as predicted the first two rounds before seeing both underdogs win in the semi-finals.

   *  Second half rallies were the norm for a few teams Friday night. Ramsay fell behind 19-7 before coming back to take a 26-19 win over Leeds. Saraland led 27-0 after the first quarter and 37-14 at the half. But Homewood rallied to tie the game at fifty before failing on a two-point try in overtime. The Spartans held on for a dramatic 57-56 win.

   *  Pisgah jumped out to a 20-8 halftime lead, fell behind 22-20 before pulling out a 26-22 victory over Aliceville. Auburn scored with 1:49 remaining to defeat Central Phenix City 14-13. Gulf Shores led 14-0 at the half but eventually fell to Faith Academy 20-14. Pleasant Grove defeated Arab 41-38 in double overtime.

   *  How about Andalusia? The Bulldogs have survived to play in the semifinals six of the last seven seasons but have not reached the title game since 1977 when  they won their last championship under coach Don Sharpe. The Bulldogs take on Catholic Montgomery. The Knights defeated the Bulldogs 45-23 in week ten.

   *  Only a single number four seed advanced to the semi-finals as Mobile Christian defeated Pike County 27-7. Mobile Christian forfeited four games, lost three others before reeling off six consecutive wins.

   *  Coosa Christian, Millry, St. James and Theodore won a third round playoff game for the first time in their school's history and will advance to the semi-finals for the first time.

   *  Teams who have not reached the semi-finals in a while include; B.B. Comer (1995), Charles Henderson (2013), Muscle Shoals (2013), Pisgah (2002) and Sylvania (1994).

   *  Teams who have never won a semi-final playoff game include; Coosa Christian, Faith Academy, Highland Home, Millry, St. James, Sylvania and Theodore.

   *  Teams who have never hosted a semi-final game include; Theodore, Ramsay and Millry.

   *  Teams who have not won a semi-final playoff game in a while include; Andalusia (1977), B.B. Comer (1995), Cherokee County (2009), Mountain Brook (1996) and Pisgah (2000).

   *  Teams you do not wish to face in the semi-finals along with their all-time record in the semi-finals. Charles Henderson 2-0, Pleasant Grove 4-1, Cherokee County 4-1, Fyffe 7-2, Oneonta 10-2.

   *  Best home team records in the semi-finals of the playoffs for teams hosting games next week. Cherokee County 3-0, Mobile Christian 4-1 and Fyffe 5-2.

   *  The road team with the best record for teams playing next week on the road is by far Oneonta at 7-1.

   *  A lot of teams will be seeking their first ever trip to a championship game. Theodore, St. James, Sylvania, Highland Home, Millry and Coosa Christian will be in search of their first ever title game next week.

   *   The best semi-final  matchups I would most like to see; Saraland  (12-1) at Theodore (13-0), Andalusia (12-1) at Catholic Montgomery (13-0) and Leroy (11-1) at Millry (12-1). All those games are rematches from this season.

   *  Of the 26 remaining teams, fifteen have never won an AHSAA playoff state championship. Here are those schools hoping to bring home their first title.
           7A - Auburn
6A - Muscle Shoals, Saraland, Theodore
5A - Faith Academy, Pleasant Grove
           4A - Catholic Montgomery
3A - St. James, Sylvania, Mobile Christian
           2A - B.B. Comer, Highland Home, Pisgah
           1A - Coosa Christian, Millry

   *  Theodore is 13-0 for the first time in school history Lee-Scott Academy in 12-0 for the first time ever.

   *  Deshler lost to Oneonta 62-21 to snap the state's longest winning streak at thirteen games. Now Catholic Montgomery, Theodore, Fyffe and Patrician share the lead with 13 consecutive victories.

   *  Catholic Montgomery had scored 40 or more points in twelve straight games and 23 of the last 25 games before being held to a season low 21 points in a 21-14 win over Handley.

   *  Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 304 games after beating Tuscaloosa Academy in the third round 35-7. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   With their latest win, Oneonta now is in sole possession of first place for most victories in state history. The Redskins with 719 wins lead T.R. Miller with 718. Oneonta can extend that lead next week.
