Week Four Tidbits & Records

The region races are heating up after a couple of week of play. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings Top Ten and the scoring averages for every team will be available Sunday.

   *  Over one half of the scheduled games were moved to Thursday night as teams tried to avoid impending bad weather. If you missed any of the action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.

   *  A couple of happenings during the week included Pinson Valley self reporting a violation and forfeiting their win over Florence in week one. Blount head football coach was placed on administrative leave until further notice.

   *  Seventeen ranked teams lost this week and twelve of those losses were to other ranked schools.

   *  Want some close games? Decatur defeated Cullman 39-36 in 3 overtimes. Helena came from 19 points down in the third quarter to beat Chilton County 35-28 in overtime. Pelham overcame a 20 point deficit in the fourth quarter to outscore Briarwood 35-34 in a wild game.

   *  #6 Ramsay (2-1) knocked off #2 Pleasant Grove 21-14 in a shocker on Thursday night.

   *  For the second week in a row a team has knocked off a ranked opponent for the very first time. Last week Orange Beach accomplished the feat and this week Coosa Christian did the same thing. The Conquerors (2-2) came from 14 points down to defeat Decatur Heritage Christian 35-21 in a shocker. Coosa Christian had been 0-20 against ranked opponents before Thursday night.

   *  Fort Payne was shutout by Gadsden City 18-0. That is the first time the Wildcats have failed to score in a game since 2014. That's a total of 88 games.

   *  Clay-Chalkville has scored at least 40 points in 17 of their last 18 games. The last two times they failed to put up at least forty points came against Mountain Brook. No surprise there.

   *   Opelika upset #1 Central Phenix City 17-14 in overtime. It is the first loss for Central, when they were in the top ten, against an unranked team since the 2012 football season.

   *  Southeastern is 3-0 on the season. It is their best start ever. Arab is 4-0 for the first time since 1990.

   *  Did you notice? In the highest scoring game of the week Southside Selma outscored Sumter Central 68-38. No less than a dozen teams topped the 60 point mark on offense.

   *  Alabama teams are a combined 16-20 vs. out-of-state competition. They were 4-12 against Georgia, 8-3 vs. Florida, 3-1 vs. Tennessee and 1-4 against Mississippi.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 252 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs defeated rival Spain Park 24-10.

   *  The Clay-Chalkville Cougars have begun the 2022 football season by extending the state's longest winning streak at nineteen straight games. The Cougars had a tough time beating Pinson Valley but came out on top 14-12.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 66 straight contests. They fell to Hartselle 63-6. Columbia could surpass the state's longest losing streak in history held by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row. The Eagles have allowed at least 38 points in 39 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 football season. By the way Hartselle was a 55 point favorite in the game, so they covered the spread.

   *   Lanett had a streak of 34 consecutive region wins snapped by Highland Home Thursday losing 28-18 to the ranked Flying Squadron. American Christian with a string of 30 straight region victories will take over the lead. The Patriots defeated Bibb County in  a region game Thursday night. Mars Hill (28) is next up.

   *   Barbour County has lost 53 straight region contests after losing to LaFayette 72-6 on Saturday.

   *   The Brantley Bulldogs also saw their string of 27 consecutive regular season wins stopped in a 42-35 loss to Elba Thursday. Catholic Montgomery now leads the way with a streak of 18 consecutive regular season victories.

   *   Clay-Chalkville has won a state leading 16 straight games at home.

   *   Guntersville holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 14 consecutive road games. The Wildcats defeated Douglas 40-6 Thursday night on the road to add to their lead.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 294 games after beating Whitesburg Christian 49-0. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   The Elba Tigers have won 599 games since 1922 according to our records. They will be going for win number 600 in two weeks following an open date this coming week.

   *   Scott Basden, the head coach at Muscle Shoals, won the 200th game in his coaching career as the Trojans defeated Athens 28-20 Friday night. Coach Basden started out at Parrish before moving to Cordova and Muscle Shoals. His 2007 team won a state championship with a perfect 15-0 record. Over the course of his 23 year career all but two of his teams have qualified for the playoffs.

   *   Ryan Lolley picked up the 100th victory of his career as Northridge beat Bessemer City 40-12. Lolley came over to Northridge this year after nine seasons at Gordo. His overall record stands at 100-20.

   *   Lee Ozmint also joins the 100 win club as the Arab Knights shutout Sardis 42-0 Friday. Arab is off to their best start in years. Coach Ozmint is 100-50 in 14 seasons as a head football coach.
