THIS WEEK IN ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

AHSFHS.org Report
(Oct 8, 2022)

Week Eight Tidbits & Records

We are less than a month from the playoffs. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings Top Ten and the scoring averages for every team will be available by Sunday. If you missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.

   *  You may notice we are tracking the teams who have clinched region titles and playoff spots now. Look for them in the Region Standings.

   *   Someone asked me if another team has ever been ranked number one in three different classification. Mars Hill accomplished that feat earlier this year. Actually five other teams have been ranked at the top of an ASWA poll in three different classifications. Clay County, Colbert County, Cordova, Gordo and Lanett have all done it. But, one schools tops them all. Elba has been ranked Number One at some point in a season in  four different classifications. The odd thing with Elba is they did it backwards. They were #1 in 4A in 1984, #1 in 3A in 1993, #1 in 2A in 2016 and #1 in 1A this season. Lanett and Colbert County sort of did the same thing by going down in classification.

   *  The biggest games of the week were also games that will decide region championships. Florence beat Huntsville 27-7, Hueytown defeated McAdory 32-27, Muscle Shoals outlasted Decatur 42-28 and Fairhope surprised Daphne 26-7.

   *  Ten ranked teams lost this week but four of those losses were to other ranked schools. The biggest surprises were Charles Henderson shocking Eufaula 34-7. Another surprise was Center Point knocking off Pinson Valley 42-28.

   *  Meek shutout Shoals Christian 63-0. It was the first shutout for the Cinderella Tigers in 81 games since the 2015 football season.

   *  Southeastern is 7-0 on the season. It is their best start ever. Moody is 8-0 for the first time in school history. Meek is 7-0 for the first time since 1986. Highland Home is 8-0 for the first time since 1983. Excel is 7-0 for the first time since 1997.

   *  Gulf Shores (7-1) is off to the best start in any season ever. Arab is 7-1 for the first time since 1993 and J.B. Pennington is 7-1 for their best start to a season since 1995.

   *  On the flip side of winning, Springville has started the 2022 season 0-8 and that is their worst start since 1961. Huffman is 0-8 for their worst start to a season since 1968. Citronelle has started this season 0-7 and that is their worst start to a season since 1975.

   *  Alabama teams are a combined 27-35 vs. out-of-state competition. They were 8-15 against Georgia, 9-8 vs. Florida, 5-4 vs. Tennessee and 4-7 against Mississippi.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 256 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *  Three teams are tied for the lead with nine consecutive wins. Deshler, Beauregard and Moody have the longest winning streaks.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 69 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Cullman 35-6. Columbia has surpassed the state's longest losing streak in history held by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row. The Eagles have allowed at least 35 points in 42 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 football season.

   *   American Christian leads for most consecutive region victories with 33 straight wins. The Patriots defeated West Blocton 27-12 in a region game Friday night. Mars Hill (31) is next up.

   *   Barbour County has lost 56 straight region contests after losing to Highland Home 36-14 in a region contest.

   *   Catholic Montgomery now leads the state with a streak of 22 consecutive regular season victories. The Knights dropped Bullock County 64-0. Hartselle has won 21 straight regular season games.

   *   Clay-Chalkville has won 18 straight home game games to lead all teams. The Cougars shutout Huffman 62-0.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also has the longest road winning streak at 13 games. Oneonta has won 12 straight on the road.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 298 games after beating Sand Rock 70-14. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Oxford can become the 33rd school to record their 600th win in this week when they take on Clay-Chalkville. The Yellow Jackets are 599-381-44 since starting their football program back in 1920. We actually have four schools sitting on 599 victories all-time. Lanett, Andalusia and Winfield are all poised to join the 600 win club this coming week.

   *   Clarke County won the 500th game in school history as they defeated J.U. Blacksher 20-0. The Bulldogs are 500-469-55 since first playing football back in 1917.
