Week Nine Tidbits & Records


Region championships are being determined each week now. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings Top Ten and the scoring averages for every team will be available by Sunday. Smiths Station plays Jeff Davis Saturday in the final game this week. If you missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.

   *  You may notice we are tracking the teams who have clinched region titles and playoff spots now. Look for them in the Region Standings.

   *  The biggest games of the week were also games that will decide region championships. Mary Montgomery squeaked by Daphne 14-9 to earn their first playoff spot in 20 years. Hartselle defeated Decatur 41-14 and Leeds grabbed a region title by beating Moody 14-13. Central Phenix City surprised #1 Auburn 38-17 and Houston Academy defeated Opp 42-7.

   *  Fifteen ranked teams lost this week but nine of those losses were to other ranked schools. The biggest surprise was Dora shocking Northside 33-13. Another surprise was Arab knocking off Guntersville 34-20.

   *  Calera knocked off #8 Helena 52-51 in four overtimes. It is their first victory over a ranked opponent since the 2013 season. Arab beat #7 Guntersville 34-20 and that is their first win over a ranked team since 2016 and only their second since 1993. Vincent defeated #10 Isabella and that is their first win over a ranked team since 2011.

   *  Six games topped the 100 point mark this week. They were led by Priceville outscoring Westminster Christian 72-45. Thirteen teams scored over 60 points in their wins. Eight teams set records for most points scored in a game by both teams.

   *  Southeastern is 8-0 on the season. It is their best start ever. Meek is 8-0 for the first time since 1986. Highland Home is 9-0 for the first time ever. Excel is 8-0 for the first time since 1997. Priceville is 9-0 for the first time ever.

   *  Gulf Shores (7-1) is off to the best start in any season ever. Arab is 8-1 for the first time since 1993, Corner is 7-1 for the first time since 1995 and J.B. Pennington is 8-1 for their best start to a season since 1995. Verbena is 7-1 for the first time since 1975.

   *  On the flip side of winning, Springville has started the 2022 season 0-8 and that is their worst start since 1961. Citronelle has started this season 0-8 and that is their worst start to a season since 1975. Pell City is off the their worst start since 1961 at 0-8.

   *  Alabama teams are a combined 34-39 vs. out-of-state competition. They were 8-17 against Georgia, 10-9 vs. Florida, 9-4 vs. Tennessee and 6-8 against Mississippi.

   *   Gordo has assured themselves of another winning season to run their string to 30 straight. Oneonta owns the record with a string of 37 straight winning seasons between 1958-1994.

   *   Luverne has qualified for the state playoffs once again this year for the 40th straight season. That is the state record.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 257 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs beat Chelsea 38-0 setting up a huge game next week against Thompson.
          
   *  Deshler beat Rogers 35-13 to lead the state with ten consecutive wins. They were tied with Beauregard and Moody but both those teams lost this week.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 70 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Athens 49-6. Columbia has surpassed the state's longest losing streak in history held by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row. The Eagles have allowed at least 35 points in 43 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 football season.

   *   American Christian leads for most consecutive region victories with 34 straight wins. The Patriots defeated Sipsey Valley28-3 in a region game Friday night. Mars Hill (32) is next up.

   *   Barbour County has lost 57 straight region contests after losing to Horseshoe Bend 57-8 in a region game.

   *   Catholic Montgomery now leads the state with a streak of 23 consecutive regular season victories. The Knights dropped Dale County 52-0. The Knights have scored 40 or more points in nine straight games and 20 of the last 22 games. Hartselle has won 22 straight regular season games.

   *   Clay-Chalkville has won 19 straight home game games to lead all teams. The Cougars defeated Oxford 25-20.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also has the longest road winning streak at 14 games. Oneonta has won 13 straight on the road.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 299 games after beating Pisgah 40-6. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   The Andalusia Bulldogs defeated B.T. Washington 36-14 and celebrated the 600th victory in the school's history. The Bulldogs are 600-403-39 since 1920.

   *   Lanett won the 600th game in school history as they defeated Goshen 30-25. The Panthers are 600-371-25 since first playing football back in 1920. Also getting to the 600 win mark were the Winfield Pirates with a 25-13 win over Fayette County and an overall record of 600-368-48.

   *   Oxford can become the 36th school to record their 600th win in this week when they take on Center Point. The Yellow Jackets are 599-382-44 since starting their football program back in 1920.

   *   Steven Kilcrease won the 100th game of his coaching career. With stops at Pike Liberal Arts and now at Ariton, he has a record of 100-39 in a dozen seasons as a head football coach.

   *   Coach Phil Lazenby at Bayside Academy can join the 200 win club this coming week when his Admirals take on Satsuma. He has an overall record of 199-106 with stops at Guntersville, Southside Gadsden, Benjamin Russell and Bayside Academy. A great coach and a better person for sure.

 * Bayside Academy set a team record in a win 66-48 over Escambia County breaking the previous record set in a victory over Mobile Christian 60-40 on 9/24/2010.

 * Colbert County set a team record in a win 75-38 over Clements breaking the previous record set in a victory over Tharptown 68-0 on 9/14/2018.

 * Corner set a team record in a win 69-0 over Curry breaking the previous record set in a victory over Vincent 62-6 on 8/28/2015.

 * Priceville set a team record in a win 72-45 over Westminster Christian breaking the previous record set in a victory over Brewer 70-0 on 8/27/2021.

 * West Morgan set a team record in a win 69-0 over East Lawrence tying the previous record set when they defeated Clements 69-0 on 10/2/1998.

 * Clements set a team record in a 75-38 loss to Colbert County breaking the previous record set in a loss to West Limestone 72-0 on 9/15/1950.

 * Westminster Christian set a team record in a 72-45 loss to Priceville breaking the previous record set in a loss to Central Florence 70-69 on 9/23/2022.



Margin of Victory in a game

 * Corner set a team record by defeating Curry 69-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Hayden 61-0 on 9/8/1967.

 * Gadsden City set a team record by defeating Lee Huntsville 55-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Mae Jemison 53-0 on 10/7/2022.

 * Hazel Green set a team record by defeating OPEN 999-60 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Mae Jemison 54-0 on 10/14/2022.

 * Horseshoe Bend set a team record by defeating Barbour County 57-8 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Marbury 53-7 on 10/5/2001.

 * West Morgan set a team record by defeating Clements 69-0 tying the previous record set when they defeated East Lawrence 69-0 on 10/2/1998.

 * Mae Jemison set a team record with a 0-9 record. That tops the previous number of losses when they finished 2-8-0 in 2021.

 * Park Crossing set a team record with a 0-8 record. That ties the previous number of losses when they finished 2-8-0 in 2021.



Teams that set a record for most points scored in a season

 * Moody set a team record by scoring 405 points. That tops the previous mark of 378 points set in 2013.

 * Sparkman set a team record by scoring 362 points. That tops the previous mark of 336 points set in 2015.

 * Vincent set a team record by scoring 434 points. That tops the previous mark of 420 points set in 2011.

 * Mae Jemison set a team record by allowing 483 points. That tops the previous mark of 347 points set in 2021.

 * New Brockton set a team record by allowing 327 points. That tops the previous mark of 317 points set in 2013.

 * Pell City set a team record by allowing 362 points. That tops the previous mark of 332 points set in 2012.

 * Sand Rock set a team record by allowing 319 points. That tops the previous mark of 311 points set in 2018.

 * Sylacauga set a team record by allowing 415 points. That tops the previous mark of 358 points set in 2005.

 * Talladega set a team record by allowing 455 points. That tops the previous mark of 424 points set in 2021.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
