Hoover White


Hoover White was a graduate of Central High School in Courtland, Alabama. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Alabama State University and a Masters Degree from Alabama A&M University. White served as a teacher, coach, and principal for many years, dedicating his career to the youth of Lawrence County.

White coached 15 years at Central-Courtland where his football teams posted an 86-22-3 overall record which included a 28-game winning streak. His teams were conference champions seven times and he was NAHSAA Coach of the Year in 1960. He also coached track and won six conference titles He later served four more years as a principal.

The important aspects of Mr. Whites life were civic, community, and professional activities; foremost among these were the charter of North Courtland, Incorporated, and the establishment of the R.A. Hubbard Recreational Park.

White was a member of the Seven Star Lodge #137 AM of Alabama P.H.A., and the Alabama Democratic Conference, serving as past president of the Fifth Congressional District. Coach White was inducted into the Alabama and Lawrence County Sports Halls of Fame and he served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of sergeant.

Hoover Whites brother, Louis White is also a member of the AHSAA Hall of fame and long time coach in Alabama. He is the uncle to current Tarrant coach Laron White.

Coach Hoover White passed away on January 31, 1999.
