2A-R6  Class/Region 1A-R1
#7  ASWA Ranking #2
68.4  Power Rating 55.4
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Coosa Christian as a 13 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Leroy Bears defeated Coosa Christian by a score of 28-21 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Thu., Dec. 7 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Leroy and Coosa Christian have met 2 times on the field.... Leroy holds a 2-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Coosa comes in as the lone remaining 3 seed in the playoffs (of course, not really a 3 seed),and having knocked off those pesky Tornadoes from Pickens County 21-12 Friday night. Leroy comes in having pulled off a big upset last week knocking off previously unbeaten Elba 27-24.

Coosa was run heavy against Pickens County, rushing 58 times for 298 yards. Kanon Wilson was the workhorse going for 159 on 30 carries. The speed of Pickens County was able to slow down Coosa somewhat. But Coosa do what great teams do, they still found a way to win.

Taylor Crumedy caught 7 passes for 194 against Elba. Leroy did have some ball security issues against Elba, they can't afford those mistakes this week. They did give up 302 to Alvin Henderson, but who doesn't?

I like Coosa if this game is going to be physical. If Leroy can get outside and also spread the field with the passing game then it may be trouble for the conquerors. You don't see a lot of 1A teams who pass a lot.

Prediction:  Coosa 35 Leroy 24

 Madison Academy (7-5) at
 Mobile Christian (3-7)
at Bryant Denny Stadium
Madison Academy   Mobile Christian
7-5 (6-2)  Record 3-7 (3-3)
4A-R8  Class/Region 4A-R1

80.3  Power Rating 74.9
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Madison Academy as a 5 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Mobile Christian Leopards defeated Madison Academy by a score of 55-28 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Thu., Dec. 7 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Mobile Christian and Madison Academy have met one time on the field.... Mobile Christian holds a 1-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Madison Academy comes in undefeated and coming off an exciting 48-43 win over a great Geraldine team. Mobile Christian, very similarly comes in undefeated and off an exciting 34-30 win over defending champion St. James.

Madison Academy got production out of both the passing game and the running game against Geraldine. Ken Cherry rushed for 188 yards and 5 TD's, while Jackson Reece caught 12 passes for 175 yards.

Mobile Christian created a lot of chaos and caused St James to turn the ball over 5 times Friday night. The Leopards put up an impressive 300 yards on the ground against St, James, however they gave up over 7 yards a play on defense.

Both teams have put up big numbers this year and I see no reason for that to change. I like the balance of Madison Academy. However, if Mobile Christian causes as much chaos on defense as they did last Friday night, then all bets are off.

Prediction:  Madison Academy 44 Mobile Christian 35

 (#5)  Thompson (11-3) at
 (#4)  Central Phenix City (10-3)
at Bryant Denny Stadium
Thompson   Central Phenix City
11-3 (6-1)  Record 10-3 (5-2)
7A-R3  Class/Region 7A-R2
#5  ASWA Ranking #4
105.9  Power Rating 104.3
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Thompson as a 2 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Thompson Warriors defeated Central Phenix City by a score of 21-7 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Wed., Dec. 4 during the 2024 football season.

Series:   Central Phenix City and Thompson have met 5 times on the field.... Thompson holds a 3-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Both teams coming off the off week. CPC is undefeated and looking for their first title since 2018. A big reason CPC hasn't won a title since then is that the subsequent 4 have been won by Thompson. Thompson would love to make it 5 in a row. Common opponents doesn't shed a lot of light on the matchup. Thompson played Hewitt Trussville twice, winning by margins of 26 and 11, while CPC beat HT by 24 earlier in the season. CPC defeated region foe Opelika by 10, while Thompson took them out by 31.

Both teams were prohibitive favorites in the semifinals but got a better game than most were expecting. CPC got by a scrappy Mary Montgomery team, largely due to the arm of Andrew Alford who threw for 286 yards. Cam Coleman got a lot of attention from the MGM defense, no problem, Daylen Upshaw stepped up and got 9 receptions for 174 yards and 2 TD's.

Thompson fell behind 10-0 early to Hewitt Trussville before reeling off 21 straight to closeout the game 21-10. Thompson has looked human at times this season, especially as of late, with a down Hoover team pushing them 21-11 and then having to comeback against the aforementioned HT team and win 21-10. However, do not be fooled, Thompson is still Thompson. Freeman will have his team ready.

I think this is a true toss up. I like the way Seaborn is collected and really commands this Thompson offense. I love how Thompson really gets after it on defense. I love how CPC has one of the best receivers in the state but has other options they can go to with confidence should your defense focus on him.

Prediction:  CPC 21 Thompson 14

 (#6)  Clay-Chalkville (9-3) at
 (#1)  Saraland (13-1)
at Bryant Denny Stadium
Clay-Chalkville   Saraland
9-3 (5-1)  Record 13-1 (8-0)
6A-R6  Class/Region 6A-R1
#6  ASWA Ranking #1
102.1  Power Rating 108.1
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Saraland as a 6 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Clay-Chalkville Cougars defeated Saraland by a score of 31-28 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Thu., Dec. 7 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Saraland and Clay-Chalkville have met 2 times on the field.... Clay-Chalkville holds a 2-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    I've been looking forward to this one all year. These could be the two best teams of any class, and we could also get a once-in-a-lifetime player vs player matchup.

The Clay-Chalkville Cougars are back in the state championship game for the 2nd time in three years, in large part due to the work of DB-turned-QB Jaylen Mbakwe. However, the Cougars had to finish their Semifinal game against Parker without their star player as he exited the game with apparent ''concussion-like symptoms.'' He is expected to be good to go this week, though, and if the Thompson game earlier this season was any indication, we could see him playing both ways if need be. There are a number of other stars on this team, including but certainly not limited to OT JacQawn McRoy, WR Mario Craver, and LB D'Angelo Barber. Easy to see why they average 40 points per game while only giving up 10.

The Saraland Spartans have pretty much been unanimously considered the best team in the state all season behind the arm of Texas commit KJ Lacey and teammates WR Ryan Williams and DT Antonio Coleman. They're usually up 21-0 before you can even blink, and their domination continued with a 46-7 win over Pike Road in the Semifinals. In that game they out-gained their opponent 573 to 159. In a state semifinal game! So year, they're pretty good. As a side note, 5 Star Junior receiver Ryan Williams is supposed to be making an announcement about his future in the days after the game, so stay tuned for that development.

In my opinion, the dream scenario for this one is to see Jaylen Mbakwe line up at DB across from Ryan Williams, 5 star on 5 star. That alone would be worth the price of admission and is what I'm most interested in seeing in this one, assuming Mbakwe does indeed play both ways some.

Prediction:  Saraland 31, Clay-Chalkville 21

 Ramsay (8-4) at
 Gulf Shores (4-6)
at Bryant Denny Stadium
Ramsay   Gulf Shores
8-4 (5-1)  Record 4-6 (4-4)
5A-R5  Class/Region 6A-R1
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
92.4  Power Rating 93.3
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Gulf Shores as a 1 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Gulf Shores Dolphins defeated Ramsay by a score of 21-14 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Thu., Dec. 7 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Gulf Shores and Ramsay have met one time on the field.... Gulf Shores holds a 1-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    In retrospect, these two teams have probably been on a collision course all year, as they spent most of the season atop the ASWA rankings, and there are a lot of similarities between them on paper.

If there's one area that Ramsay likely has an advantage, it's at quarterback. Kameron Keenan has been lights-out all year, ranking 5th in the state in passing yards with 3,196. He went 26/32 for 406 yards and 3 TDs last week against Guntersville, with speedy WR Tremell Washington catching 11 of those passes for 151 yards and all three scores. RB Ashton Ashford is one of the top in the state at his position as well. Defensively, this team loves to get after the opposing QB and only allows about 12 points per game.

Two weeks ago, Gulf Shores won a Quarterfinal game for the first time in school history, and now they've made it to the state championship game. The Dolphins have as good a RB duo as you'll find in Kolin Wilson and Ronnie Royal. Wilson is coming off a 281-yard rushing performance on just 20 carries in their semifinal win over Eufaula. It was his 12th 100 yard game of the season. In that same game, Royal had 118 yards on 11 carries. Their defense is coming off their best performance of their with a shutout in the Semifinals, and that's saying something for a defense that is only allowing 9 points per game and has allowed 20 just twice.

Both teams score on a lot of big plays. Gulf Shores on the ground, Ramsay through the air. Both defenses allow less than two touchdowns a game. On paper it looks even, so this one will likely come down to two things: the line of scrimmage, which I think favors, and experience, which also favors defending champs Ramsay.

Prediction:  Ramsay 33, Gulf Shores 14

 (#5)  Thompson (11-3) at
 (#4)  Central Phenix City (10-3)
at Bryant Denny Stadium
Thompson   Central Phenix City
11-3 (6-1)  Record 10-3 (5-2)
7A-R3  Class/Region 7A-R2
#5  ASWA Ranking #4
105.9  Power Rating 104.3
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Thompson as a 2 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Thompson Warriors defeated Central Phenix City by a score of 21-7 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Wed., Dec. 4 during the 2024 football season.

Series:   Central Phenix City and Thompson have met 5 times on the field.... Thompson holds a 3-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    The Super 7 opens Wednesday night, as always, with the 7A State Championship Game. Thompson comes in searching for their 5th straight state title. The last team to beat them in the postseason? Central Phenix City in the 2018 title game.

Freshman QB Trent Seaborn is truly remarkable for Thompson. When their starter got injured last season, he came off the bench and led them to the state title as an 8th grader. He's well on his way to becoming the most decorated player in state history by the time his career is finished. Two weeks ago the Warriors rallied from a 10-0 deficit to defeat Hewitt-Trussville 21-10 to reach this point. This has been one of the state's best defenses all year, as the only team to score more than 14 on them was Clay-Chalkville.

Even in the midst of a bye week, Central Phenix City WR Cameron Coleman stole headlines when he flipped his commitment from Texas A&M to Auburn last week. Now he'll have one last chance to show out for his future school. Defensively, just assume the entire Red Devil secondary will be playing on Saturdays. Both starting corners and both starting safeties are rated at least 3 star prospects, so it'll be interesting to see if this group can limit the damage Seaborn is able to do through the air.

Usually we get to this point and can just pencil Thompson's name onto the trophy, but for much of the year Phenix City has looked to be the better team. It should be a physical, defensive battle, but ultimately I think the experience Thompson has in this situation wins out.

Prediction:  Thompson 23, Central Phenix City 14

3A-R8  Class/Region 2A-R4
#5  ASWA Ranking #4
75.6  Power Rating 68.6
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Fyffe as a 7 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Fyffe Red Devils defeated Reeltown by a score of 43-24 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Thu., Dec. 7 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Reeltown and Fyffe have met 3 times on the field.... Fyffe holds a 3-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Well this is a rematch from the 2019 state title game, where everything that could go wrong, went wrong for Reeltown that day. They were ran out of the stadium, off the back of a ton of turnovers. However, that was four years ago, this is a completely different team. Last week on the road they played the number one team in the class, and beat them. That doesn't happen often.

Reeltown forced five turnovers in that game as well. Fyffe did their thing, with the help of their star Logan Anderson. So we get Arthur Woods, vs Logan Anderson. There won't be many pass plays in this game. I can almost guarantee that. I think this will be a very intriguing matchup. I think the style will favor Fyffe, as I believe to beat them you have to be pretty balanced.

I think Reeltown is very run heavy. But they have speed, more speed than many would realize. They are extremely fast and athletic. So I think those cancel out each other. But can the Reeltown defense get stops and keep Fyffe's offense off the field? I think that is the ultimate question. Because Fyffe is like a body shot. It doesn't hurt in the first, but after a couple late, you really start to feel them. Fyffe's offense is a body shot, you feel them late in the game. But if Reeltown gets out to a lead, they can get Fyffe out of that offense and make them uncomfortable. It really is a great matchup.

As great as a game as I believe this will be, I am going with championship experience again. Give me Fyffe, late with a great physical football game.

Prediction:  Fyffe 29 Reeltown 21

 (#3)  Cherokee County (13-2) at
 (#1)  Catholic Montgomery (14-0)
at Bryant Denny Stadium
Cherokee County   Catholic Montgomery
13-2 (7-0)  Record 14-0 (6-0)
4A-R6  Class/Region 5A-R2
#3  ASWA Ranking #1
87.7  Power Rating 90.2
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Catholic Montgomery as a 3 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Catholic Montgomery Knights defeated Cherokee County by a score of 35-0 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Thu., Dec. 7 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Catholic Montgomery and Cherokee County have met one time on the field.... Catholic Montgomery holds a 1-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Welcome back to the title game Catholic. Feels like it has been overdue. Catholic finally got over the hump of the semi-final games that had haunted them for the past two seasons. Cherokee County did what they said they were going to do back in July and made it back to the title game.

Now here is where things get interesting. Cherokee County's starting QB has a torn ACL. He played on it last week, and he is a warrior for that as many would not even think about playing with an injury like that. But, I think that puts your offense in a tough position. The Catholic Defense knows that the QB will not be able to move like he did when he was healthy. So the Knight defense will likely play the run very hard.

The Catholic Defense has been very strong all year long. They have eight shutouts on the year. I think this one may be a defensive war, as Cherokee also has a strong defense.

I think the Catholic defense will prevail and will get them their first state title. If Cherokee had a healthy starting QB, This would be a much tougher pick. But in the end, I think that really limits your options. Party on Vaughn Road, the Knights are bringing home a title.

Prediction:  Catholic 24 Cherokee County 10

 (#5)  Thompson (11-3) at
 (#4)  Central Phenix City (10-3)
at Bryant Denny Stadium
Thompson   Central Phenix City
11-3 (6-1)  Record 10-3 (5-2)
7A-R3  Class/Region 7A-R2
#5  ASWA Ranking #4
105.9  Power Rating 104.3
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Thompson as a 2 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Thompson Warriors defeated Central Phenix City by a score of 21-7 in the Super Seven Championship game at Home  on Wed., Dec. 4 during the 2024 football season.

Series:   Central Phenix City and Thompson have met 5 times on the field.... Thompson holds a 3-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Well we have made it to the battle that many of us thought we might have back in August, and now we get it here in December. While things have changed, one thing has stayed the same and that is these two football programs winning games. Central Phenix City has really crushed most of their competition. It has not felt like they have had a game in doubt this season. Thompson actually lost a football game this year, and it was to Clay Chalkville. Now that game was on national television, and against a great team.

But they have had their fair share of slow starts this season. We have seen it a few times where Thompson has stumbled out of the gate, but gets it together and wins by double digits. Nothing wrong with winning, but can you bounce back from a slow start against Central Phenix City? That is my question. Here is my question for Central Phenix City, Have they played anyone like Thompson? I am going to say no. I believe that Thompson has faced better competition in a sense, but not by a large margin.

I think that Central Phenix City has the game charger at wide receiver in Cam Coleman. But can Thompson guard him. If Thompson locks down Coleman, where does the Central Phenix City offense go from there? Thompson has the talent to do so, but doing it is a whole different game. Can Central Phenix City rattle Trent Seaborn. I haven't seen it happen this year. He plays the game like a veteran, which is crazy considering he is a freshman. I think this will be a very close football game.

I have picked against Thompson before the state title game and it has not gone well for me. I have learned from my mistakes. I think if these two teams played ten times, each of them would win five and split it. That is how even this game is. However, I am going with championship game experience. I am going with Mark Freeman with the thinnest edge over Central Phenix City. Give me Thompson with a walk off field goal.

Prediction:  Thompson 32 Central Phenix City 29

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Morgan Academy Senators have appeared in 14 state championship games from 1984-2008, winning the title 11 times.
