Auburn and Opelika first met on the football field in 1917 with the more experienced team from Auburn coming out ahead by a score of 57-0. The Tigers had fielded a team for a few seasons while Opelika was just beginning to play the sport. The game was usually played in late October or early November for many years. Recently they have switched to an early season meeting. Between 1974 and 2013, this game was more than just a rivalry. The two teams resided in the same region and many times the game resulted in only the winner qualifying for a playoff spot or homefield advantage in the post season. In 2014 Auburn moved up to Class 7A while Opelika remained in 6A but the series has continued. The two teams have played every year since 1930. A total of 90 game shave been played and the series is almost even with Opelika holding a slim 45-42-3 edge. As recently as 2012, Auburn won during the regular season but was eliminated by the Bulldogs in the playoffs. Someone once called it the "hate-the-other-side-but-respect-them" rivalry, thanks to the residents in both cities living in one place and working in the other. They are just two small towns in Alabama that live through their teams. Oddly neither team has a winning record on their home field. One of the biggest upsets came in the last game of the 1956 season. Auburn traveled to Opelika with a 6-3 record while the Bulldogs entered the contest with a dismal 1-7 mark. The Tigers pulled off the upset of sorts by leaving with a 6-6 tie.
