Game MVP:
Records: Addison (14-0); Brantley (13-1)
Coaches: Allen Stephenson, Addison and Mike Sasser, Brantley
Game: Played Friday December 3, 1976 at Addison
Summary: Addison became the first team to
win championships in two different classes as they captured the
Class 1A title after claiming the Class 2A championship in 1970.
Addison fell behind early but it wasn't something new as they
had trailed the past three games only to come back and win.
Addison capped off a perfect 14-0 season and handed Brantley
their only loss in 14 games. Brantley scored first on a 11 play
66 yard drive when Dorsey scampered 22 yards for a touchdown.
Addison came right back to score when quarterback Greg Wiggins
hit Brent Chandler with a 21 yard strike 3:57 before halftime.
Following a third quarter touchdown Addison went 46 yards in
eight plays to take a 14-6 lead when fullback Tyler Hayes scored
from the seven on the first play of the fourth quarter. Joe
Hulsey intercepted another Brantley pass returning it to the
Brantley 10 yard line. Hayes scored three plays later and with
two minutes remaining Addison could begin the celebration.
Dorsey was the game's leading rusher with 92 yards on 18 runs
while Hayes gained 74 yards on 20 trips.
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
