Summary:

Major Ogilvie led the Spartans to a thrilling 52-26 win over Murphy in a game loaded with big plays. There was a total of 953 yards of offense and 557 of it belonged to Mountain Brook. Ogilvie gained 339 of those yards on 36 carries and scored four of the touchdowns.
Murphy was led by the passing of John Holman and the receiving of all-state end Mardye McDole who caught five passes for 242 yards and three scores. In addition, he threw a pass good for another 28 yards and carried the ball three times for seven yards. Ogilvie set the tempo for the game when he ran untouched 80 yards for a touchdown.
Murphy wasted little time in countering with a 76 yard pass to McDole on their third play from scrimmage.
The game would go back and forth with Mountain Brook answering every Murphy score. Holman was Murphy's leading rusher with 44 yards on six carries. The championship game appearance was the first for the Panthers. Major Ogilvie would finish the year with 2,504 yards rushing.
