Game: Played Friday December 3, 1976 at Legion Field in Birmingham
Summary: Major Ogilvie led the Spartans to
a thrilling 52-26 win over Murphy in a game loaded with big
plays. There was a total of 953 yards of offense and 557 of it
belonged to Mountain Brook. Ogilvie gained 339 of those yards on
36 carries and scored four of the touchdowns.
Murphy was led by
the passing of John Holman and the receiving of all-state end Mardye McDole who caught five passes for 242 yards and three
scores. In addition, he threw a pass good for another 28 yards
and carried the ball three times for seven yards. Ogilvie set
the tempo for the game when he ran untouched 80 yards for a
touchdown.
Murphy wasted little time in countering with a 76
yard pass to McDole on their third play from scrimmage.
The game would go back and forth with Mountain Brook answering
every Murphy score. Holman was Murphy's leading rusher with 44
yards on six carries. The championship game appearance was the
first for the Panthers. Major Ogilvie would finish the year with
2,504 yards rushing.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
