Summary:
          The Hazlewood Golden Bears fell one point short of a state championship as the Elmore County Panthers won the Class 2A state championship by a score of 7-6. The two teams fought to a scoreless first half before Eufaula got on the scoreboard in the third period.
          Pierre Leonard intercepted a Rocky Odell pass at the Bears 22-yard line to set up the Panthers in scoring position. Four plays later Alvin Freeman scored on a one yard run to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
          Hazlewood's lone score came when Lynwood Fuqua returned a fumble 48 yard for a touchdown early in the final stanza. Place kicker Thomas Jones missed the all-important PAT and Elmore County still led 7-6. With 19 seconds remaining, Hazlewood had a potential game-winning 44 yard field goal blocked.

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
