Game: Played December 5, 1980 at Silas
Summary:
With eight minutes remaining in the
game it looked like Gordo would not win their second state
championship when they trailed 22-12. But, the Green Wave's
fortunes were about to change.
Freshman Derrick Knox returned a punt
67 yards for a touchdown and following a two-point conversion
Gordo trailed only 22-20. Then a two yard run by quarterback
Jeff Parker with 1:42 to play in the game turned Gordo from
despair to elation.
Southern Choctaw had one final chance
from their own 7-yard line following the kickoff. But Parker,
playing defense, sealed the victory when he intercepted a pass.
Gordo ran out the clock for their second title since 1968.
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
