Coaches: Lou Scales, Alexandria and Jack Wood, Elba
Game: Played Friday December 6, 1985 at Alexandria
Summary:
Legendary Hall of fame coach Lou
Scales finally got a state championship in his final game after
38 seasons as the head football
coach of the Valley Cubs. Alexandria had fallen short in five
previous playoff appearances but came through on the night by
routing Elba 35-0.
Junior tailback Tony
Young rushed for 202 yards on 29 carries and scored three touchdowns to pace
the Cubs. He scored on runs of 22, one and 13 yards with Keith
Hennegar hitting all the extra points.
The Valley Cubs struck
first following an Elba bad snap on a punt attempt gave them the
football at the two yard line. Hollis Brewster scored on two
yard run.
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
