Game MVP:
Records: Reeltown (15-0); Winston County (13-2)
Coaches: Duane Webster, Reeltown and Larry Bishop, Winston County
Game: Played Friday December 4, 1987 at Malcolm Blake Stadium, Double Springs
Summary:
Reeltown capitalized on Winston
County errors to come away with a 9-7 victory for their first
state championship and the first title in Coach Duane Webster's
30 year coaching career. Winston County opened the scoring when
backup quarterback Bobby Daniel scored on a sneak early in the
second quarter.
Reeltown came back quickly when Gerald Potts ran
the ball in from 4 yards out for a touchdown after Winston
County lost a fumble at their own 30 yard line. With 1:34
remaining in the first half, Rodney Brooks would recover another
fumble for Reeltown at the Winston 36 and then caught a 27 yard
pass from Tracey Holstick to set up a 27 yard field goal by
Scott Meadows.
The Yellow Jackets had two more chances to take
the lead but 44 yard field goal attempts by Daniel and David
Brockway both fell short.
