Game MVP: Paul Caldwell, Vigor and Brian Moore, Shades Valley
Records: Vigor (13-1); Shades Valley (13-2)
Coaches: Harold Clark, Vigor and Robert Higginbotham, Shades Valley
Game: Played Saturday December 5, 1987 at Legion Field, Birmingham
Summary:
When The Vigor Wolves lost
superstar running back Lectron Williams in the second quarter to
a severe knee injury it seemed as if the Wolves would have a
tougher time of it moving the football. Paul Caldwell filled in
quite nicely for the state champs by carrying the football 24
times and gaining 250 yards. The Wolves ran 26 plays in the
second half and Caldwell carried the ball 18 of those plays for
182 yards.
When Caldwell squirted through several tackles on a 7
yard touchdown run early in the second half, he gave Vigor the
lead for good at 12-10. A short time later, early in the fourth
quarter, Caldwell broke loose on a 61 yard run that would all
but clinch the victory for the Wolves.
The state championship is
the first for the Prichard team having never made it to the
title game previously. It was also the first time a Shades
Valley team had advanced to the championship game. Shades Valley
came into the game as a team known for not making mistakes as
they had only 14 turnovers all season long, and didn't turn it
over against Vigor to keep them in the game.
