Game MVP:
Records: Billingsley (14-1); Courtland (11-2)
Coaches: James Carter, Billingsley and Louis White, Courtland
Game: Played Friday December 2, 1988 at Mims Field, Billingsley
Summary:
Deano Orr scored twice for
Courtland as Billingsley missed an extra point late in the game
that would have tied the score and created overtime. Courtland
would hold on to win their first state championship after seven
previous playoff appearances came up short. It was the second
straight year that Billingsley lost in the 1A title game.
Courtland led 22-8 at the half before Billingsley staged a
furious comeback attempt.
On a fourth and 7 play, Deon Timmons
completed a double reverse pass to Anthony Johnson for the
touchdown with 1:46 remaining. The Bears fell one point shy when
Lanier's point after try failed.
