Coaches: Mack Wood, Elba and Gilmore Brannon, Rogers
Game: Played Friday December 1, 1989 at Florence
Summary:
The
Cinderella team of the 1988 playoffs could not match their
previous heroics in the championship game. The Rogers Pirates
won two games in the final seconds and another in the second
half to advance to the tile game.
The Elba
Tigers, led by running backs Reggie Horstead and Anthony Brooks,
moved the football on the ground to grind out a 14-0 win for the
3A state championship. The two teams struggle to get going early
before Elba moved the ball to the Pirates two yard line on a 15
play drive in the second quarter.
The Pirates
defense held on a goal line stand but was forced to quick-kick
and the Tigers took over at the Pirates 21-yard line. Horstead
scored on a two yard run shortly before the half ended. Brooks
scored on a 2-yard run with 8:09 remaining in the game to seal
the victory for the Tigers.
