Summary:
The Trinity Wildcats brought
home a state championship in their first ever appearance in the
Super Six. The Wildcats broke open a close game by scoring three
touchdowns in the last minute of the first half.
Trinity took a 3-0 first
quarter lead before falling behind in the second quarter 7-3.
That is when the fireworks began. Tommy Trott caught a 26-yard
pass from Rory McKean with 1:05 remaining in the half to take a
10-7 lead.
Brioni Rutland returned the
ensuing kickoff 88 yards to give the Tigers a short lived 14-10
lead with 45 seconds left in the half. Following a sky kick by
Deshler, the Wildcats answered on the first play from scrimmage
when Rory McKean found Jack Bartlett down the left sideline.
Bartlett broke into the clear, but fumbled the ball while
attempting to switch it into his other hand. Austin Hoyt
recovered the ball in the end zone it to complete the 64-yard
scoring play with 29 seconds left in the half.
The Wildcats weren't done.
They recovered an onside kick at the Deshler 38 and McKean found Tommy Trott
on a 38-yard scoring pass with 16 seconds left in the half.
Trinity led 24-14 after both teams scored four touchdowns in 49
seconds. Neither team scored in the second half and Trinity won
their first state championship.
