Cottonwood finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Cottonwood just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region two with a 2-4 region record. The Bears had some tough luck last season as four of their seven losses were by less than eight points. Since 2010, Cottonwood has gone a combined 41-45. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 2A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cottonwood has managed to compile a record of 158-115. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 2A and 112nd in the AHSAA. The Bears are led by head coach John Gilmore who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-15 over the past two seasons at Cottonwood. The Bears have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Gilmore. Coach Gilmore's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 29-38 (43.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gilmore's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Cottonwood Bears will play in Class 2A region two during the 2018 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Bears could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season. Cottonwood has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2014 but hope to return to the post season this year. The Bears open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Slocomb on Friday, August 31 at Hicks Stadium. Last year the Slocomb Red Tops finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in third place in Class 3A region two. The Red Tops lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to American Christian by a score of 38-0. Cottonwood and Slocomb have met a total of 40 times on the football field. The Bears have a 25-14-1 record against the Red Tops. They last met in 2011 with Slocomb winning by a score of 21-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
