2018 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
G.W. Long finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-8 record. Last year G.W. Long finished sixth in Class 2A region two with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. G.W. Long took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2010. The Rebels lost as many games as in any season since 2008. The Rebels hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 12-1 record in 2016. G.W. Long was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Rebels want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.3 points a game. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, G.W. Long has gone a combined 70-23. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 2A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, G.W. Long has managed to compile a record of 156-110. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 2A and 103rd in the AHSAA. The Rebels are led by head coach Scott Horne who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 75-28 over the past nine seasons at G.W. Long. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won five region crowns with Coach Horne. Coach Horne's overall record as a head football coach in nine season stands at 75-28 (72.8%). The G.W. Long Rebels will play in Class 2A region two during the 2018 season. The Rebels have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 57-51 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 2A and 125th in the AHSAA. The Rebels enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. It will be an uphill battle for the Rebels if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just a single win last year, G.W. Long will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Rebels open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Dale County on Friday, August 31 at Warrior Stadium. Last year the Dale County Warriors finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 4A region two. The Warriors lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Bibb County by a score of 41-12. G.W. Long and Dale County have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 7-8-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2017 with Dale County winning by a score of 34-0. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
