 2018 Preview 


       Gaston finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Gaston finished seventh in Class 2A region six with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Gaston took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2012. The Bulldogs hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 6-5 record in 2016.

       The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Gaston averaged scoring just 8.3 points a game. The Bulldogs also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 36.1 points a game.

       Since 2010, Gaston has gone a combined 40-46. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 2A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Gaston has managed to compile a record of 131-132. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 2A and 181st in the AHSAA.




       The Bulldogs are led by head coach Swane Morris who is entering his fifteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 99-63 over the past fourteen seasons at Gaston. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Morris.

       Coach Morris' overall record as a head football coach in seventeen season stands at 104-88 (54.2%). His 104 wins rank 56th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Morris' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and won two region championships.

       The Gaston Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region six during the 2018 season. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 62-49 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 2A and 78th in the AHSAA.

       This season, the Bulldogs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six.

       The Bulldogs open the 2018 season against non-region opponent on Friday, August 24

       This will be the first meeting between Gaston and on the football field.

       Gaston returns 2A All-State  linebacker Lane Talbot. He was named to the second team last season.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
