Sidney Lanier completed the 2017 season with a 10-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region two, the Poets earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Sidney Lanier reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Spanish Fort by a score of 48-26. The Poets won as many games as in any season since 1978. The defense was very stingy last season as Sidney Lanier ranked 41st in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.1 points a game. Since 2010, Sidney Lanier has gone a combined 29-55. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Sidney Lanier has managed to compile a record of 97-151. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 6A and 288th in the AHSAA. The Poets are led by head coach Marvin Cunningham who is entering his third season at the helm.
