2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. Paul's completed the 2017 season with a 14-1 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region one, the Saints earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. The Saints reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 5A State Championship by defeating Briarwood at the Alabama Super Seven 17-14 in Auburn. The Saints hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Mask saw improvement as they won fourteen games following a 9-4 record in 2016. The defense was very stingy last season as St. Pauls ranked 21st in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.9 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Saints have gone 23-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, St. Paul's has gone a combined 93-17. Their 84.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, St. Paul's has gone a combined 212-80. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 6A and 22nd in the AHSAA. The Saints have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2008. The Saints are led by head coach Steve Mask who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 72-13 over the past six seasons at St. Paul's. Under his direction the Saints have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won one region crown with Coach Mask. Coach Mask has won three state championships at St. Paul's, the last coming in 2017. Coach Mask's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-one season stands at 172-86 (66.7%). His 172 wins rank 15th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Mask's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of sixteen times and won six region championships. He has a 35-13 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. The St. Paul's Saints will play in Class 6A region one during the 2018 season. The Saints move up in classification to Class 6A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Saints enter the 2018 season riding a 7 game winning streak. St. Paul's has won 6 consecutive region games. They have won 7 straight games on their home turf at E.E. Delaney Field. While most teams rebuild during the off season, St. Paul's has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Saints enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region one and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 6A Super Seven come December. The Saints have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2009 and this year should be no exception. The Saints open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent UMS-Wright on Friday, August 24 at E.E. Delaney Field. Last year the UMS-Wright Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in second place in Class 4A region one. The Bulldogs won the Class 4A State Championship last season when they defeated Fayette County by a score of 21-7 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. St. Paul's and UMS-Wright have met a total of 46 times on the football field. The Saints have a 23-23-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2017 with St. Paul's winning by a score of 9-0. St. Paul's returns 5A All-State defensive back Reggie Bracy. He was named to the second team last season. The Saints also return defensive back Yates Grehan. He was named to the honorable mention team. College prospects include: A.J. Finley (6-2, 175) running back, | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
