Thompson completed the 2017 season with a 12-1 record. The Warriors cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Thompson captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Warriors since the 1997 season. Thompson made a nice playoff run in 2017, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Hoover team by the score of 31-12. The Warriors won as many games as in any season since 1982. The 496 points scored by the Warriors last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2006 season that the Warriors qualified for the playoffs. The Warriors hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Freeman saw improvement as they won twelve games following a 5-5 record in 2016. Since 2010, Thompson has gone a combined 32-51. Their 39.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 7A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Thompson has managed to compile a record of 111-139. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 7A and 247th in the AHSAA. The Warriors are led by head coach Mark Freeman who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 22-11 over the past three seasons at Thompson. Under his direction the Warriors have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Freeman. Coach Freeman's overall record as a head football coach in nineteen season stands at 186-48 (79.5%). His 186 wins rank 14th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Coach Freeman won six state championships prior to arriving at Thompson, the last coming in 2013 at Spanish Fort. The Thompson Warriors will play in Class 7A region three during the 2018 season. The Warriors have one of the toughest schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-45 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 7A and 47th in the AHSAA. Region three will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Warriors enter the 2018 season riding a 10 game regular season winning streak. The Warriors should be considered one of the favorites for the region three championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Warriors open the 2018 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent James Clemens on Friday, August 24 at . Last year the James Clemens Jets finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 7A region four. The Jets closed out the regular season with a loss to Austin by a score of 28-14. This will be the second meeting between Thompson and James Clemens on the football field. The Warriors have a 1-0-0 record against the Jets. They last met in with Thompson returns 7A All-State offensive lineman Amari Kight. He was named to the first team last season. The Warriors also return running back Shad Byrd. He was named to the second team. The Warriors also return quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. He was named to the first team.
