2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Walter Wellborn finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Walter Wellborn just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region five with a 2-4 region record. Walter Wellborn took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2009. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2008. Walter Wellborn was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.6 points a game. Since 2010, Walter Wellborn has gone a combined 53-35. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 3A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Walter Wellborn has managed to compile a record of 121-134. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 3A and 206th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Jeff Smith who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 57-42 over the past nine seasons at Walter Wellborn. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith. Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-one season stands at 133-97 (57.8%). His 133 wins rank 34th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times and won one region championship. The Walter Wellborn Panthers will play in Class 3A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 3A but move from region five over to region six. Region six will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. It will be an uphill battle for the Panthers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region six this season. After just 2 wins last year, Walter Wellborn will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Panthers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Oak Grove on Thursday, August 23 at The Hill. Last year the Oak Grove Tigers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 4A region four. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Hueytown by a score of 68-12. Walter Wellborn and Oak Grove have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 2-0-0 record against the Tigers.
