2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Homewood completed the 2017 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Homewood captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Homewood reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Clay-Chalkville by a score of 30-0. The Patriots won as many games as in any season since 2005. The Patriots hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Berguson saw improvement as they won ten games following a 5-6 record in 2016. The defense was very stingy last season as Homewood ranked 26th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.8 points a game. Since 2010, Homewood has gone a combined 62-28. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Homewood has gone a combined 216-79. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 6A and 18th in the AHSAA. The Patriots have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. The Patriots are led by head coach Ben Berguson who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 33-14 over the past four seasons at Homewood. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Berguson. Coach Berguson's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 39-20 (66.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Berguson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won two region championships. The Homewood Patriots will play in Class 6A region five during the 2018 season. The Patriots should be considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Patriots have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2011 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Patriots open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Hueytown on Thursday, August 23 at Waldrop Stadium. Last year the Hueytown Golden Gophers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 6A region five. The Golden Gophers lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Oxford by a score of 30-7. Homewood and Hueytown have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 14-4-0 record against the Golden Gophers. They last met in 2017 with Homewood winning by a score of 23-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
