 2022 Preview 


       Athens completed the 2021 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Athens just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region eight with a 3-4 region record.

       Athens took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2017.

       Since 2010, Athens has gone a combined 61-70. Their 46.6% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Athens has managed to compile a record of 166-124. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 6A and 125th in the AHSAA.




       The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Cody Gross who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 35-30 over the past six seasons at Athens. Under his direction the Golden Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gross.

       Coach Gross' overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 62-52 (54.4%). Over the course of his career, Coach Gross' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won two region championships.

       The Athens Golden Eagles will play in Class 6A region seven during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Golden Eagles remain in 6A but move from region eight over to region seven.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Golden Eagles could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season. Athens came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

       The Golden Eagles open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent East Limestone on Saturday, August 20 at Golden Eagle Stadium. Last year the East Limestone Indians finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in second place in Class 5A region eight. The Indians lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Center Point by a score of 66-36.

       Athens and East Limestone have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Golden Eagles have a 10-6-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2019 with Athens winning by a score of 42-21.
