2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cleveland completed the 2021 season with a 12-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region six, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. The Panthers won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 2A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Clarke County at the Alabama Super Seven 49-41 in Birmingham. No team at Cleveland ever won more games in a season than the twelve victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2015. The 660 points scored by the Panthers last year were a team record in a single season. The high-scoring Cleveland offense ranked 6th in the AHSAA. They averaged 44.0 points a game. Since 2010, Cleveland has gone a combined 86-53. Their 61.9% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 2A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cleveland has managed to compile a record of 137-137. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 2A and 184th in the AHSAA. The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Will Glaze as they enter the 2022 season. Coach Glaze served as an assistant coach at Central Phenix City last season. The Cleveland Panthers will play in Class 2A region six during the 2022 season. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Panthers enter the 2022 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak. The Panthers should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Panthers are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Panthers have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2013 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Panthers open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Oneonta on Friday, August 19 at Michal Dixon Memorial Stadium. Last year the Oneonta Redskins finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in first place in Class 4A region six. The Redskins lost in the Class 4A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Vigor. They final score was 52-14 in the Super Seven finals in Birmingham. Cleveland and Oneonta have met a total of 45 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 6-35-4 record against the Redskins. They last met in 2021 with Oneonta winning by a score of 41-20. Cleveland returns 2A All-State Senior running back Tyler Smith. He was named to the second team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
