2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Southeastern completed the 2021 season with a 8-5 record. With their 4-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 2A region six, the Mustangs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Southeastern lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Cleveland team by a score of 39-8. No team at Southeastern ever won more games in a season than the eight victories last year. The 423 points scored by the Mustangs last year were a team record in a single season. Southeastern is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only ten seasons. They have managed a record of 31-71 over the past ten years. Over the past 10 seasons, Southeastern has not won much with a record of 31-71. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 2A and 349th in the AHSAA. The Mustangs have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. The Mustangs are led by head coach Kevin Byrd who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 23-21 over the past four seasons at Southeastern. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Byrd. Coach Byrd's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 23-21 (52.3%). The Southeastern Mustangs will play in Class 2A region six during the 2022 season. The Mustangs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. The Mustangs open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Ragland on Friday, August 26 at Joan Ford Stadium. Last year the Ragland Purple Devils finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in third place in Class 1A region five. The Purple Devils lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Decatur Heritage Christian by a score of 76-60. Southeastern and Ragland have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 2-3-0 record against the Purple Devils. They last met in 2013 with Ragland winning by a score of 41-0. Southeastern returns 2A All-State Senior receiver Ben Hall. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
