 2022 Preview 


       Georgiana finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Georgiana finished eighth in Class 1A region one with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Georgiana averaged scoring just 8.8 points a game. The Panthers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 35.6 points a game.

       The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-15 record. Since 2010, Georgiana has gone a combined 68-63. Their 51.9% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Georgiana has managed to compile a record of 127-142. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 1A and 221st in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Berry Bess who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Georgiana. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Bess.

       The Georgiana Panthers will play in Class 1A region two during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 1A but move from region one over to region two.

       The Panthers enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 11 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Georgiana will be to simply win some games.

       The Panthers open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent W.S. Neal on Friday, August 19 at Harmond Field. Last year the W.S. Neal Eagles finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in seventh place in Class 4A region one. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to T.R. Miller by a score of 40-16.

       Georgiana and W.S. Neal have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 6-10-3 record against the Eagles. They last met in 1970 with W.S. Neal winning by a score of 17-14.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
