2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Wadley completed the 2021 season with a 13-2 record. Last year Wadley captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Bulldogs won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 1A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Sweet Water at the Alabama Super Seven 40-16 in Birmingham. No team at Wadley ever won more games in a season than the thirteen victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2005. The Bulldogs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Motley saw improvement as they won thirteen games following a 3-8 record in 2020. The defense was very stingy last season as Wadley ranked 31st in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.1 points a game. Since 2010, Wadley has gone a combined 85-51. Their 62.5% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Wadley has gone a combined 201-93. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 1A and 45th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Shenan Motley who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 21-15 over the past three seasons at Wadley. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Motley. Coach Motley's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 22-24 (47.8%). Over the course of his career, Coach Motley's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship. After a 3-8 season in 2020 the Bulldogs turned it all around with an impressive 13-2 record last year. The Wadley Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region six during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 1A but move from region five over to region six. The Bulldogs enter the 2022 season having won 7 straight region games. The Bulldogs should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Bulldogs are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Bulldogs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2012 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Bulldogs open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Horseshoe Bend on Friday, August 19 at Battle Stadium. Last year the Horseshoe Bend Generals finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 2A region four. The Generals ended last season on a positive note with a win over Woodland by a score of 14-6 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Wadley and Horseshoe Bend have met a total of 31 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 18-13-0 record against the Generals. They last met in 2021 with Wadley winning by a score of 27-7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
