2022 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Abbeville finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year Abbeville finished seventh in Class 2A region two with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Abbeville took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2016. The Yellow Jackets hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 12-2 record in 2020. Abbeville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Yellow Jackets want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.2 points a game. Abbeville struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.6 points a game. Since 2010, Abbeville has gone a combined 75-57. Their 56.8% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 2A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Abbeville has managed to compile a record of 112-155. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 2A and 266th in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach LaBrian Stewart who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-9 over the past two seasons at Abbeville. Under his direction the Yellow Jackets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Stewart. Coach Stewart's overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 33-71 (31.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Stewart's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship. After four straight great seasons in Abbeville the Yellow Jackets fell on hard times last season. They are in hopes of bouncing back in 2022. The Abbeville Yellow Jackets will play in Class 2A region two during the 2022 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Yellow Jackets if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just 2 wins last year, Abbeville will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Yellow Jackets open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Beulah on Friday, August 19 at Bobcat Stadium. Last year the Beulah Bobcats finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 3A region four. The Bobcats closed out the regular season with a loss to LaFayette by a score of 30-0. Abbeville and Beulah have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 1-2-0 record against the Bobcats.
