Guntersville completed the 2021 season with a 9-2 record. Last year Guntersville captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Guntersville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Ramsay by a score of 28-20. The high-scoring Guntersville offense ranked 10th in the AHSAA. They averaged 42.6 points a game. Since 2010, Guntersville has gone a combined 98-37. Their 72.6% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 5A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Guntersville has gone a combined 189-94. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 5A and 54th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Lance Reese who is entering his thirteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 98-37 over the past twelve seasons at Guntersville. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times. The Wildcats enter the 2022 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. Guntersville has won 6 consecutive region games. The Wildcats should be considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Wildcats have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2012 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Wildcats open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Southside Gadsden on Friday, August 19 at Barney Hood Stadium. Last year the Southside Gadsden Panthers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 6A region seven. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Mountain Brook by a score of 63-0. Guntersville and Southside Gadsden have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 9-4-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 1989 with Guntersville winning by a score of 34-21. Guntersville returns 5A All-State Senior receiver Brandon Fussell.
