 2022 Preview 


       St. Clair County finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year St. Clair County finished eighth in Class 5A region six with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The offense struggled putting points on the score board as St. Clair County averaged scoring just 10.7 points a game. The Fighting Saints also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 38.8 points a game.

       The Fighting Saints would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, St. Clair County has gone a combined 44-83. Their 34.6% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 5A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, St. Clair County has managed to compile a record of 128-140. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 5A and 211st in the AHSAA.




       The Fighting Saints are led by head coach P.J. Wright who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at St. Clair County. The Fighting Saints have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Wright.

       Coach Wright's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 11-29 (27.5%).

       The St. Clair County Fighting Saints will play in Class 5A region six during the 2022 season.

       The Fighting Saints enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 14 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

       This season, the Fighting Saints will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region six. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at St. Clair County will be to simply win some games.

       The Fighting Saints open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Ashville on Thursday, August 18 at Ken Logan Stadium. Last year the Ashville Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 4A region six. The Bulldogs ended last season on a positive note with a win over Weaver by a score of 33-6 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       St. Clair County and Ashville have met a total of 49 times on the football field. The Fighting Saints have a 21-28-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with Ashville winning by a score of 33-9.

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
