2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brewer completed the 2022 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region eight, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Brewer's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Scottsboro by a score of 45-14. It marked the first time since the 2018 season that the Patriots qualified for the playoffs. The Patriots have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023. Brewer was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Patriots want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.2 points a game. Since 2010, the Brewer football program has struggled with a record of 33-98. Over the past 25 seasons, Brewer has not won much with a record of 60-193. Their 24.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 5A and 372nd in the AHSAA. The Patriots have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. The Patriots are led by head coach Matt Plunkett who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 7-14 over the past two seasons at Brewer. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Plunkett. Over the course of his career, Coach Plunkett's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times . The Patriots could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. The Patriots open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Hanceville on Friday, August 25 at Ray Talley Stadium. Last year the Hanceville Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region six. The Bulldogs ended last season on a positive note with a win over East Lawrence by a score of 54-23 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Brewer and Hanceville have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 4-14-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Brewer winning by a score of 20-13. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
