 2023 Preview 


       Sylvania completed the 2022 season with a 10-4 record. With their 5-2 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region six, the Rams earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Sylvania made a nice playoff run in 2022, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Piedmont team by the score of 55-22.

       Since 2010, Sylvania has gone a combined 88-58. Their 60.3% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sylvania has managed to compile a record of 155-118. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 3A and 120th in the AHSAA.




       The Rams are led by head coach Tyler Vann who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 18-7 over the past two seasons at Sylvania. Under his direction the Rams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Vann. Over the course of his career, Coach Vann's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times .

       Coach Vanns team will return eleven starters this season and he thinks the strength of this team will be up front and in the trenches. Expectations are high but a very difficult non-region schedule against some of the best lower classification teams will prove difficult. Non-region opponents are Fyffe, Pisgah and Saks.

       Preventing injuries will be the key to another successful season at Sylvania. This team could challenge Piedmont for the region crown in 2023. The Rams have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-47 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 3A and 16th in the AHSAA.

       Sylvania enters the 2023 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Ram Stadium.

       The Rams are considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Rams are making another deep run into the playoffs.

      QB Jaxon Smith will be returning this season. Coach Vann called him a game manager last season but hopes to open up the offense more in 2023 under his leadership.

       The Rams open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Saks on Friday, September 1 at Jack Stewart Field. Last year the Saks Wildcats finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 3A region four. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Trinity by a score of 37-0.

       Sylvania and Saks have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Rams have a 3-2-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Sylvania winning by a score of 19-6.

       Sylvania lost 3A All-State  running back Braiden Thomas to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

       The Rams return 3A All-State Senior defensive lineman Ashdon Cooley. He was named to the first team last season.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
