2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Saks completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 3A region four, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Saks's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Trinity by a score of 37-0. The Wildcats hope to get back closer to the 12-2 record in 2021. Since 2010, Saks has gone a combined 111-41. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Saks has managed to compile a record of 160-118. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 3A and 104th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats will be under the direction of new head football coach Alphonso Freeney as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Freeney made a winner out of a winless team in one season at Pasco High School in Florida. He also served as running backs coach and junior varsity offensive coordinator for J.W. Mitchell High School from 2014-2021. The Wildcats went out of state to land head football coach Alphonso Freeney from Florida. He is known for rebuilding a program but will inherit one in great shape at Saks. Coach Freeney has put together a coaching staff from scratch and feels confident in his assistants. The Wildcats should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. The Wildcats open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Ohatchee on Thursday, August 24 at Roy C. Owens Field. Last year the Ohatchee Indians finished with an overall record of 3-8 and in fourth place in Class 3A region six. The Indians lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Gordo by a score of 50-6. Saks and Ohatchee have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 3-6-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2022 with Saks winning by a score of 41-15. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
