2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Washington County finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Washington County finished sixth in Class 2A region one with a 0-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 1991. Washington County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.7 points a game. Washington County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.1 points a game. The Bulldogs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Washington County has gone a combined 86-65. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Washington County has managed to compile a record of 176-113. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 2A and 89th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Johnny Carpenter who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Washington County. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Carpenter. Over the course of his career, Coach Carpenter's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times . The Bulldogs enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Bulldogs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. The Bulldogs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Marengo on Friday, August 25 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Marengo Panthers finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 1A region three. The Panthers closed out the regular season with a loss to Flomaton by a score of 56-0. Washington County and Marengo have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 3-3-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Marengo winning by a score of 34-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
