2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marengo completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Marengo just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region three with a 2-4 region record. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2013. Marengo was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.6 points a game. Since 2010, Marengo has gone a combined 69-71. Their 49.3% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marengo has managed to compile a record of 130-135. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 1A and 197th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Katrell Watters who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-6 record in his first season at Marengo. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Watters. The Panthers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region three this season. Marengo came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. Marengo simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 56 students, the Panthers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Panthers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Washington County on Friday, August 25 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Washington County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 2A region one. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Leroy by a score of 56-6. Marengo and Washington County have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 3-3-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Marengo winning by a score of 34-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
