 2023 Preview 


       Wilcox Central finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-8 record. Last year Wilcox Central finished eighth in Class 4A region one with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Jaguars have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2001 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Jaguars last playoff victory came during the 2001 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Wilcox Central averaged scoring just 9.9 points a game. The Jaguars also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 41.4 points a game.

       The Jaguars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-17 record. Since 2010, the Wilcox Central football program has struggled with a record of 17-112.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Wilcox Central has not won much with a record of 71-185. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 4A and 361st in the AHSAA. The Jaguars have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2001.




       The Jaguars will be under the direction of new head football coach Brandon Cheatham as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Cheatham gets his first head coaching job at Wilcox Central.

       This season, the Jaguars will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one.

       The Jaguars open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent McKenzie on Friday, August 25 at Williams-Vickery Field. Last year the McKenzie Tigers finished with an overall record of 1-8 and in eighth place in Class 1A region two. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Elba by a score of 31-0.

       Wilcox Central and McKenzie have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 1-4-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 1952 with McKenzie winning by a score of 20-6.
