2023 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Alexandria completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region six, the Valley Cubs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Alexandria's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Pleasant Grove by a score of 43-14. The Valley Cubs hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 11-1 record in 2021. Since 2010, Alexandria has gone a combined 95-49. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Alexandria has finished a combined 203-79. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 5A and 28th in the AHSAA. The Valley Cubs have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. The Valley Cubs are led by head coach Todd Ginn who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 41-16 over the past five seasons at Alexandria. Under his direction the Valley Cubs have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Ginn. The Valley Cubs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2016 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023. Coach Ginn will be counting on Senior DE/TE DeMarkus Williams and RB/LB Ty Brown to be the leaders this season at Alexandria. Ty Walker will likely be the staring quarterback when the season opens this fall. The Valley Cubs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Cherokee County on Friday, August 25 at Warriors Stadium/Johnson Field. Last year the Cherokee County Warriors finished with an overall record of 12-3 and in first place in Class 4A region six. The Warriors lost in the Class 4A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Andalusia. They final score was 28-7 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. Alexandria and Cherokee County have met a total of 43 times on the football field. The Valley Cubs have a 28-15-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2015 with Alexandria winning by a score of 65-49. Alexandria lost 5A All-State athlete Antonio Ross to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. The Valley Cubs return 5A All-State Junior kicker Cleat Forrest. He was named to the first team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
