2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Decatur completed the 2022 season with a 9-3 record. With their 3-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region seven, the Red Raiders earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Decatur reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Gardendale by a score of 31-7. The Red Raiders improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2018. The Red Raiders won as many games as in any season since 2016. The Red Raiders hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Savage saw improvement as they won nine games following a 4-7 record in 2021. Since 2010, Decatur has gone a combined 77-67. Their 53.5% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Decatur has managed to compile a record of 176-110. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 6A and 80th in the AHSAA. The Red Raiders will be under the direction of new head football coach Aairon Savage as they enter the 2023 season. Most recently, Coach Savage served as the secondary coach and passing game coordinator at Western Illinois University. In the past 90 years the Red Raiders have had a total of five head football coaches. That is an amazing stat. The Red Raiders have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region seven this season. Placekicker Roberto Toto will return after scoring 62 points and knocking through nine field goals last year. The Red Raiders open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Mae Jemison on Friday, August 25 at Shorty Ogle Stadium. Last year the Mae Jemison Jaguars finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in sixth place in Class 6A region eight. The Jaguars closed out the regular season with a loss to East Limestone by a score of 45-6. Decatur and Mae Jemison have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Red Raiders have a 2-1-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2022 with Decatur winning by a score of 65-0. Decatur lost 6A All-State linebacker Paxtin Dupper to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
