Guntersville completed the 2022 season with a 9-3 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region seven, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Guntersville reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Ramsay by a score of 45-9. The defense was very stingy last season as Guntersville ranked 24th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.7 points a game. Since 2010, Guntersville has gone a combined 107-40. Their 72.8% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Guntersville has finished a combined 193-92. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 5A and 51st in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Lance Reese who is entering his fourteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 107-40 over the past thirteen seasons at Guntersville. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Reese. His 107 wins rank 56th among active coaches in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Wildcats have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2012 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. Julyon Jordan rushed for 1,128 yards and scored 20 touchdowns last year and will be back for his junior season in Guntersville. The Wildcats open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Southside Gadsden on Friday, August 25 at Chorba-Lee Stadium. Last year the Southside Gadsden Panthers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 5A region six. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Ramsay by a score of 61-25. Guntersville and Southside Gadsden have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 9-4-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Guntersville winning by a score of 21-7. Guntersville lost 5A All-State punter Evan Taylor to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.
